Bowling bail rolls for kids The ball is rolling for kids at bowling alleys across the prov- ince and Sidney’s Miracle Lanes is a part of it again. The B.C. Bowling Pro- prietor’s Association’s fourth annual fundraiser to benefit the Variety Club will be held Jan. 13-27. Over the last three years, bowlers at Miracle Lanes raised over $1,200 for B.C. Bowls For Kids and last year 88 bowling centers around the province hosted about 12,000 bowlers and raised about $150,000 for children with special needs, Variety Club spokesman Ann Collette said. Bowlers are invited to pick up pledge forms for the 1990 Bowls For Kids event at Mira- cle Lanes, then bowl a game at a convenient time between Jan. 13 and 27. The monies raised are based on the amount pledged per point so the more sponsors participants are able to get and the higher their bowling scores, the greater the return to the club’s special kids. Participants are also eligible to win prizes, including a trip to Hawaii, a color TV, a VCR and -}/ a Nintendo control centre. Stelly’s Stingers meet SuperSonics The Stelly’s Stingers senior girls’ basketball will have a rare opportunity Saturday in Seattle. Two exhibition games are scheduled against Seattle area schools during a fun road trip. But what has the girls really excited is a Seattle Super Sonics NBA basketball game. After exhibition games against teams from the Holy Name Academy Catholic girls’ school and Forest Ridge High, the Stingers will head to an NBA game between Seattle and Atlanta. “For some of them itll be their first chance to see a pro game,’ coach Peter Mason said. Tonight the Stingers are in regular league action against Lambrick Park. Eagles learn lesson in 10-0 loss to Pacific Cup rival by Glenn Werkman The Review The Eagles had their wings clipped in Parksville last weekend. They were held scoreless by the Abbotsford Pilots, the first place Junior B team in the West Coast Junior Hockey league. But coach Mike Mowat knows what the problem is — and it isn’t talent, it’s conditioning. He’s been saying that ever since the Eagles lost the Pacific Cup to the Pilots at the end of the 1988-89 season. The first period of the exhibition rematch ended with the Eagles still in the game with only a 1-0 deficit. After the second period they still had a chance to come back from a 3-0 score. But in the third period the Eagles lost their legs and the Pilots took off — scoring seven unanswered goals to end the game 10-0. “We got waxed,” Mowat said. “Our conditioning is inferior because we lack the ice time or a fitness program that the players can benefit from. “Funny things happen to your mind when your body’s tired,” he said. “They invented a few mis- takes in that last period.” On the way out of the Eagles’ end, a defenseman. dropped the puck to a teammate, but the team- mate wasn’t there and the Pilots had a two-on-nothing break — BFGoodrich Lifesaver’ _ JANUARY SALE PRICES! When, and if, they win the South Island Junior League the Eagles will likely meet Abbotsford or a team of similar strength in a best-of-three series that will require all the energy they’ve got. To prepare, Eagles coaching staff has to get players motivated for dryland training, jogging and weight training. Thursday night practises won’t do it. Even three league games in three nights every couple of weeks won't do it. If the Eagles win their league, and get past the West Coast Cham- pions, they’ll have to face the Kootenay League Champions — who will be tougher than the West Coast Champions.
