Better goaltending in the South
Island All Stars net could mean a
victory over the Cowichan Valley
Warriors Junior A hockey team
tomorrow night in the Panorama
arena, the all stars head coach said.

“T’ve seen those guys and our
goaltending is definitely stronger,”
said Mike Mowat. “But up front
I’m not sure if we’re bigger.”

The South Island Junior B All
Stars practiced together for the
first time last week. Changes in
player personnel were made
because some players originally
selected from the four South

Island teams can’t play because of
suspensions.

But Peninsula Eagles goalie
Corey Volk is still starting the
game.

“We've got the best talent avail-
able in our league and we’re
playing the last place team in the
Gunior A) league,” Mowat said.

Almost half the players on the
19-player all star roster are from
the Peninsula Eagles team.

The starting forward line will
have Rob Olson on left wing with
Gary Elander at center and Mike
Gamble on right wing.

The second line will have Mike
Sato at center with wingers Nigel
Sims and Mike Wadsworth. Bran
Velacott will center Jim Malkew-
ich and Lance Wade while Greg
Wagnor will be between Gerry
Baron and Doug Williams on the
fourth line.

Ryan Curtis and Eric Ojala may
dress as back-up forwards.

On defense, Norm Westhaver
will pair with Jeff Sidhu, Bill Reid
and Dave Johns will play together
and Darren Forster and Clint Whi-
taker will share blue line duties.
Blaine Wilson may dress as a
back-up defenseman.

“We want to have some good
team concepts happening out
there,” Mowat said.

“A game like this is more
entertaining for the fans,” he said.
“It should be more intense. We’ll
have to pick it up a notch, that’s
for sure.”

Although the Warriors are in last
place in their Junior A league,
they're still at a higher level than
the Junior B players, Mowat said.

“If we win, fine, but if we lose,
that’s fine too.”

He said the Junior B players
often get pumped up in anticipa-
tion of the game because some
players have been cut from Junior
A teams and feel they have some-
thing to prove.

Game time is 8 p.m. Thursday.
Then, Sunday the Peninsula
Eagles will travel to Parksville for
an exhibition match against the
Abbotsford Arrows.

Monday the Eagles play the
Juan de Fuca Gulls in the Rec
Centre, then are at home Tuesday
to meet the Kerry Park Islanders
before travelling to Saanich for a
game against the Braves Wednes-
day, Jan. 10.
