PAGE FOUR Wednesday, December 9, 1970 Publie Apathy That public interest in civic elections is in steady decline no one will dispute. An extreme instance of public apathy was seen at Brentwood Bay on Thursday when less than a dozen ratepayers troubled to attend the only candidates’. meeting:scheduled in Central Saanich. One reason for this general disinterest is surely that few. candidates of quality have come forward. to challenge the sitting members. A while ago competition --~was livelier by far and the situation much healthier. ‘Why is it that municipal politics are in the doldrums? Is it because the electors are so well satisfied and believe their representatives to be above reproach? More likely it is because matters of public interest tend to ‘be debated behind closed doors. The cut and thrust of open discussion is rarely heard as the shutters go up the momenta storm is on the horizon. It has more than once been implied that there is.a reason for this secrecy. Reporters have been blamed for seeking-sensation rather than facts, therefore they are : regarded with caution. —- even suspicion. ‘Yet a veteran Saanich alderman with a record of 20- plus years on council, and a reputation for caustic - eriticism,: is on record as stating that he never was ‘misrepresented by the press. ~~ Policies and decisions resulting from | ‘committee of e the whole’’ deliberations are mostly cut and dried. The bones | have been picked clean by the cooks and nothing is left for. the: multitude to savour.. os ~ No one will object when private: ‘consultations. take place on matters involving the private ‘affairs of the staff, or in the negotiation, of land purchases; otherwise the occasions. for closed: door meetings should be few. ~~ and far between. The space programmers were plotting the positions in space where the other planets would be at certain times in thefuture. In verifying their work, they also calculated back- wards. The computer suddenly showed a red light. A day was missing in earth time, and all the checking couldn't alter it. Science had not believed the old Biblical story of the day the earth stood still but the latest space computers have proved it to have heen based on fact. This is not an isolated case, time and time again, learned men have taken and clung to untenable positions while. ridiculing the. pioneers who have abandoned them, - ‘There is a wealth of material to support the ‘theory that the continent of Atlantis and its great civilization once existed, and perhaps those who so busily deny the possibility that the legends and scraps of evidence are true, may. find them. to be based on - truth. after all. Donnelly. among others: has arnassed a great deal of material and Levikovski’s work shows a wealth of evidence of tremendous physical. changes in com- paratively recent times. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in the biblical record is another case. There are those who believe these cities. may have been. destroyed by nuclear action! ~ Recently, a book on Stonehenge describes the author’s and others work with computers that have proved that amazing old ruin to have. been. constructed as_an astronomical calendar: Very intricately accurate, ‘too. It seems possible, perhaps likely, that we shall rediscover these ancient powers and skills as we learn more about the force of gravity and the power of thought. Both fields. are largely “unknowns” at present. But this strange reluctance to relate to new thought and mental sciences the old skills we have wondered about so long is holding us back.
