Mac- Neill, 1492 Lands End Road, contributes further to a series of impressions of her experiences in France. After having spent the Summer months in the South of France (le Midi). I am now at. Paris.. My original plan was to spend a year in the southern regions, but at the beginning of August. I went to Stay with another family. I spent that month with them in a beautiful old fifteenth century Chateau and in the middle of September, came to Paris with them, as this is.where they live. We. drove. from Avignon to Paris, a. journey of ap- proximately eight hours.-. eight hours, that is, until about twenty. kilometres from Paris. Then, for the last twenty kilometres, on, ‘about an hour and a-half, if-you are lucky. It’s. really —un- believable. There were four lanes of.traffic going into Paris at a good lick, and then we suddenly *z came to a. dead. stop. Five. * minutes later, slowly, speeded up a bit, another” ¢ stop. and continued on in this > fashion for the rest of the way we moved. off into Paris. After having been through this experience several times, I discovered that. there's an underground passage to "LArc, so my hair has stopped turning white. Anyhow,. having Triomphe, and from: there had my first view of Paris. [t really is a beautiful city, magnificent old buildings, very..few ~highrises. little parks and. squares; trees lining the streets. However, the traffic problem is’ terrible. ft takes literally hours to get from one side of Paris to the other, and it’s often faster to walk ‘Somewhere than to take your car. This is because there is never anywhere to park. Also, many of the streets are one way, and trucks and vans delivering produce, and finding themselves without a place’ to park, just stop inthe middle of. the street and unload’ everything, taking their own sweet time about doing so.
