Home | Of Fleming-Review | Printing Lid. I ESTABLISHED 1912 Serving rural Saanich, Central Saanich, North Saanich, the Town of Sidney, and the Gulf Islands Peninsula Edition . FIFTY-EIGHTH YEAR, No.46 14 PAGES SIDNEY, Vancouver Island, B.C, Wednesday, November 18, 1970 Subscriptions, in advance, year $4.00; Copy 10¢ LETTER TO THE EDITOR EDITOR, THE REVIEW, SIR: While the motorist is told repeatedly he is responsible for his own safety, is compelled to buy automobile insurance and keep his vehicle up to standard in order to pass testing station requirements, it follows, then. that the motorist is also responsible for ensuring that his safety is placed neither at the mercy of a construction company, nor of the highway ; itself, nor of other irresponsible drivers. Hence, this letter. ae { believe the traffic and road conditions on Pat Bay High- way north of Island View Road-to be intolerable’ and ‘not: merely a matter of temporary inconvenience, Traffic con- ditions; (A} the speed limit from Island View Rd. to Sidney is 30 m.p.h.-(except for a short 30 mph. stretch}. When construction equipment is on the road and lanes are changing from day to day. | maintain the motorist should be reminded he is in a construction zone by a enforced lower. speed limit. (B) Changing of Janes from one side of road to the other is inadequately marked, especially for 50 m.p.h. traffic. ¢C) There are no flagmen to assist motorists: In some places, this would be a help. (D} The construction company appears to - . have given inadequate training to workmen regarding their : responsibility for public safety. Many unsafe and dangerous: manoeuvers have been observed by the writer. Road conditions: (A) paving from Island View Rd. north is surely not permanent? Itis undulating, contains long parallel furrows occasionally crossed by sharp ridges. Quite aside : from the loss of public money in bringing the highway. pav ing . to this state, these furrows, troughs’and ridges are extremely | _ dangerous to drive over when the road is wet. (Again, _ especially so ‘at50_m.p.h ). (Bd Night driving is like playing ‘Russian roulette, inadequate. lights, warning. signals or visible signs. “Havi ing seen two serious accidents recently in vas many days, I have reached the “last straw’ stage. I ask that the municipalities concerned take action. If lack of Money is to be the decisive factor inallieviating the hazards; then let the public be told. Perhaps a compromise situation “can be effected. At this stage. the alternatives seem to be either abandoning the public use of Pat Bay Highway: with alternate routes north and seuth being used (except for local traffic) or involving: concerned citizens t to be employed a as + -flagrhen on the highway. : _ It-is. my. hope that: these dangerois + road and traffic con- : ditions can be soon ameliorated s $0-that ‘the cost i in human life 2 and: suffering will not give. our.
