PAGE FOUR Wednesday, October 21. 1970 Liberation Of Canada Too often in recent times we have read with horror of cold-blooded crimes committed in the name of liberation. Such acts of violence have been received with incredulity and revulsion, but perhaps with a corn- fortable confidence that enormities of this nature could not. possibly. happen in Canada. We now know to our consternation that the political desperado is as much to be feared in the cultured land of ‘Canada as at the turbulent frontiers of the disrupted countries of the Levant. While the nation slowly recovers from the shattering - shock of the tragic events in Quebec, there has to be an assessment of the degree of official responsibility. There are many who believe that provincial and federal governments alike have been far too tolerant of separatist activists, and have condoned actions and threats calculated to disrupt the status quo and un- dermine the constitution. We may rejoice that responsible Quebec has united with the rest of Canada in denouncing the FLQ. Reaction to the brutal acts of the terrorists has been an un- paralleled wave of repugnance from coast to coast. Driven to the wall by a situation without precedent, the federal government has reacted in the only way possible. The temporary curtailment of civil liberties we hope will be of short duration, but all must agree that. ‘this is an inevitable consequence when the security of. _ the nation is challenged by the forces of anarchy. In Quebec, as in every province, the picture has been. dramatically changed: now viti is the liberation of Canada fiat all. ‘must s trive for. “Lest Opportunity _ ‘Sidney. ‘council by its decision to reject. the Leisure ~ Homes presentation may have lost a unique opportunity. .-of pioneering a residential conception. which has been introduced. elsewhere with: ‘marked. success. ee = The. more elaborate trailer when anchored to a ‘con- crete. ee and ‘situate with | others ine pits like. Have You Our society seems to have arrived at the place where the awareness of pollution, oxygen depletion, vanishing forests and _ wildlife are generally recognized. Perhaps, though, there is still much education to be done ac- tually. to bring home to. the average citizen what is meant by the term. ‘a dead planet’. By this term we mean a planet that cannot support organic life as we know it. This life that requires oxygen, water, a steady climate or seasonal rhythm, which in turn requires a steady cosmic balance of magnetic forces. Since, under our democratic pattern of government, the will of the people must force our representatives to take action, especially if that action imperils entrenched privilege. we. must get on with an intensive and diverse program of educating the general public. We are beginning to understand pollution in.terms of air’ and. water, but the dangerous depletion of the earth's oxygen and clean water sources is not as well known. We must find ways and means of reversing these trends, which are in fact bringing the time, when this planet will be uninhabitable, . frighteningly close. The high school t!evel of education through its curriculum could be providing many hours of study of this problem. ‘The students of this time will. only have a natural and full life on our planet if intelligent controls and RUTH ENKE VIEWS -| Augustine, The City ‘of God is ‘quoted at the start of the Massey Report, published in. 1952: ‘rather: rosy. definition — =to ponder in: offered in. addition it: is. an n acceptable altemnativ ee a sb Obviously, ‘such | a. project. ‘must ‘demonstrate. to the “dividual priorities and decisions does, give some idea of the sort of : operation and. maintenance, and.an adaptability: to. the It is appreciated that municipal councils normally. assess any novel. promotion with a certain amount of. - ‘reserve and caution, but in this instance the Leisure “Homes submission had. been favorably received by: the “that: _ the approval of the Regional Board planning authority. . : the question and a casting. vote was required to reject | * . | ol STRICT OF NORTH SAANICH 4 “As nation is an- “association of reasonable ‘beings united in a peaceful Sharing of the things they cherish;° therefore, to -> determine the quality of a - nation, you must consider what those things are.’ “This passage from.
