BOND Maybe, when you attend a play. you are a greenhorn like I was and believe all the action that goes on is that which one ob- serves Deing done by actors and actresses on stage. However, believe it or not, there are more people busy. behind the scenes, than those who appear out front! [ve been peeking behind the scenes for the up-coming mystery-farce, “Exit the Boyd" in rehearsal by. Peninsula -Plavers for. presentation’ on November 6 and 7 at. Sidnev School, and had my eves opened. To .co-ordinate. the whole ‘production {back-stage. direc- tion, scenery, plavers, etc. etc.) is producer Vivian Cowan. Then the stage manager has the im- portant job. of making certain that the stage is properly con- structed and everything is properly in place for easy movement by the players. This is being capablv handied by Chuck Swannell. I used to think that necessary: furniture was placed on-stage and then each player donned his or her’ own “costume (from grandmother's evening dress:to ‘cousin Jake’s long-johns). Mv brief experience soon convinced me just how wrong I was! There -- ig a-set designer who decides on ~ the colour of wails, furniture, rug, etc. {in-this production, Ruth Thuillier}, who works in close-co-. operation with Jill Swannell who. is in charge of costumes,.and- between these two you'll find set and costumes very well: colour- co-ordinated, =. At. this. point the players practice their lines on a bare Stage, with doors, construction). ably. “assisted by ‘Frank: Spear (and: . ‘windows, etc. _ indicated by chairs. This is where Art Gregorig:(in- charge of set. no nails can be: driven into existing walls, so sets must be braced from behind, on a special framework, so they don't collapse when a door is opened or slammed shut. Do all our readers know what a ‘silent butler’ is, and have vou ali seen an old crank-type telephone? Well. these are just two of many items which must be rounded up by Alice Simpson who is in charge of props and must see that each is in the right place at the right time. As ‘you might guess, in a mystery play the lighting is very important. Barry Cowan. and Peter Swannell are ‘right on the beam” with. split-second timing necessary in the last act. of this play; they also make certain the moon is shining at the right time and that total darkness falls to create the proper atmosphere. There are also special sound effects which vou must hear for’ yourself. These are being created by Janet Wilhelm for this production. And don’t forget. that the makeup must be deftly applied to both men‘and women to show age, pallor, ete. Jackie Price is well-experienced in this facet, with excellent assistance’ from Doneen Schwan. Possibly the term ‘‘front of the house”’ is as foreign’to you as it was to me. This means the folks responsible for selling and taking the tickets. These duties have been assigned to Florence Smith ‘and Tricia Lawrence, - _ Then there's’ a.
