SAE eh gle SAANICH PENINSULA AND GULF ISLANDS REVIEW Wednesday, October 21, 1970 _ BY BERT GREEN | No - phase -of Rotary In- ternational’s efforts to promote universal goodwill has been more “successful than the world-wide student exchange program which is now firmly established. Two years ago, Sidney Rotary Club welcomed a Chilean: girl student, Loreta San Roman, who arrived full of enthusiasm, but with very little knowledge of Canadian life or the English language. For a year she was the “adopted daughter’ of several] Retarian families in and around Sidney, attended school in her -age group and became familiar with her surroundings and the local pattern of living. In exchange for the visit, Rotary” . sponsored school student Brian Neal, who has recently. completed a year's stay in the City of Racauga, Chile Last Wednesday he recounted his New Members Lt. P-D. He confessed to a little ner- vousness on his. arrival in Chile, not knowing the language, and realizing that it was his mission to impart as great a knowledge as possible of his own country, while learning as much as he could of the manners and customs of his hosts. However, he was warmly welcomed by his new “mother and father’ and taken around and. introduced by his ‘brothers and. sisters,’ who. were most friendly from the start. There was an educational problem right away. It was ex- pected that he would be enrolled in the Catholic School, and it was with some dismay that -his “family” learned that there was no vacancy in the school and he would have to go to. the public “school attended. by the sons of ‘poor people, bad people, Communists °.and revolutionaries.” ; “The boys seemed scared of .. me and wouldn't talk,” said Brian. ‘For some reason. they seemed to think of me as an American.”’ But there. was a gradual. $4.50 Extra gal. | & “FOR § SALE : 5 HOOVER VACUUM | CLEANER _Dialamatic Model, ; $75.00 nan 656- 2022 : “before 6PM. ion LS CULUNIIA PHCTUIBES ureter an vf RVI NG AL LEN PRODUCT ION A ; -MARK LESTE RuPhilip) RonWild te ‘Also Saturday Matinee at 1315. Canadian,’’. he ex- plained. Once he entered into the swing of things at school there was friendliness. It helped when he was picked for the school team and was cheered by hundreds of the students for his efforts in the field. After term, he hitch-hiked to the extreme south of Chile and met with not the slightest dif- ficulty. either. for transportation or accommodation. Everywhere he was received with warmth, and. was invited into homes for meals .every. night. His total expenses for three weeks were but $15 Canadian. Brian said that the scenery was stupendous, with snow-capped mountains on the one hand and ‘desert and the ocean on the other. Toward the end of the trip he entered a more temperate zone of climate, and the scenery was not unlike that of British Columbia. Returning north, Brian went to stay with a new family, and was occupied teaching English to students.
