belonging to the Doran’s barked
hysterically but residents
disregarded the noise until a
boatload of policemen hurried
ashore to use the phone.

Mr. and Mrs. James Hay,
newcomers to Lands. End from
Esquimalt, spent the rest of the
afternoon viewing events through
a nautical range finder from their
glassed-in porch!

Hilda Doran was away at the
time. A busy craft co-ordinator
for. the Silver Threads, Mrs.
Doran returned to find her. door
open but things inside untouched.
‘“Anyway"’, she said philoso-
phically, “he would find no guns
_in our house and luckily, our boat
is moored elsewhere.”

Puritch who lives closer to the
Keller home,
reports.of a mother and child

The fish caught by Mr. and Mrs.
C. Long was cooked and eaten
‘aboard a Dept. of Transport

The reluctance of the sailor-
gunman to give himself up meant
that many policemen put in a 13-
hour vigil and Sidney Council
acknowledged the effort. at
Council meeting this week.

Police themselves were non-
chalant about the endurance test.
“It was all in the course of duty,”
they commented.

Saanich Says No To Hydro Centre At

B.C. Hydro were given a firm

‘plication to rezone 25.5 acres of

farmland in the Quadra-
Beckwith area for an _ ad-
ministrative, maintenance and
distribution centre.

A public hearing called by
Saanich Council unanimously
rejected the application
although, as a crown corporation,
the Hydro is exempt from
municipal zoning bylaws.

Manager of the Vancouver
Island region, A. J. Macdonald
told the hearing that any building
would be ‘years away” but the
Hydro eventually planned to
build an office and use. the
property for storing trucks,
poles, cables and other material.

PRIVATE HOUSING

And he. stressed that if the
centre was completed, there
would be much less traffic than if
the area. was subdivided for

“private housing.

“The property is still farm-
land,’ he explained, ‘‘and the
centre would be hidden by land-
scaping from nearby. streets.”

Macdonald claimed that the
land was unsuitable for housing
because it was spanned by
transmission lines with a 100 foot
right-of-way.

Macdonald emphasized that
the Hydro had “acted in good

there had been alot of ‘“‘misin-
formation, distortion. and
emotion’’ over their application.

the rejection. motion, said she
could not believe the Hydro had
acted in good faith ‘‘when a site
was chosen so close to the one

which was previously turned
down.”’
