Duck hunters aren’t as

successful at filling the
game bag as they could be.
They're up against a tough,
fast- flying and deceptive
target, and the majority of
waterfowlers don’t seem to
realize it.

A field.-check. in one
eastern U.S. state recently

turned up 988 birds among

A good rule'of thumb in
correcting this error is to
wait until you can positively
identify your target. If
you’ve been gifted with the
kind of eyesight that
enables you to identify the
various waterfowl species
at long distances, train
yourself to wait until
you’re sure of a clean kill.

Lastly, the size of the
shot used for duck hunting
can spell the difference
between dead birds in the
bag and crippled birds
wasted. Waterfowlers
seem to disagree on this
point each year, the debate
usually centering © on
number 4’s as compared
with number 6’s.

Test results favor num-
ber .4’s for ducks at 30
yards and beyond. Firing
included distances up to
65. yards. A greater num-
ber of -6’s hit the target
at all ranges, but the pene-
trating power of. the 4’s
made the difference. Far

more ducks were killed in: '
the tests with 4’s and their

greater penetrating power
resulted in far fewer crip-

But game birds deserve a
little credit, too.

almost exclusively insects.
