On behalf of the Review I hasten to apologize for this typographical error. Theoretical navigation was the’ intended wording so relax sailors, that is a crime of which you are not guilty. Frequently you hear yacht- smen complain that their races are either a drifter or a gear buster. While this may be a bit of an exageration. such seems to have been the case with the races off Sidney this summer. The final race of the spring season was the proverbial gear buster when the fleet turned. and ran before a sudden gale sweeping up Sidney Channel. Last Sunday's’ race became a drifter when the wind: completely died just as the lead boats had. edged around the Sidney Channel buoy, leaving most of the fleet of 18 vessels - becalmed within yards of the first mark and drifting rapidly back- wards with.a foul tide.:.. Most of the yachts never did round as the time limit of 31% hours for the race quickly passed ‘without a hope of finishing the course. The number of ships taking part. is a good healthy increase over the 13. of. last ‘season. This is all the more en- couraging for the Canoe. Bay Sailing Club as last Sunday saw the conflicting attractions of the Cowichan Bay Regatta in the Saanich inlet and the Ther- mopylae race off Victoria. Although not generally regarded as a spectator sport there was a fair gallery for the Start at 10.500n the Sidney wharf. This will be the starting line for the next two Sunday mornings for the three race series. Victoria’s sailmaker Ron Mack = was chosen to make the new sails: for the recently held Adam’s Cup competition for ~~ the American ladies championship. He rates with. the best and is firmly. established as” a flourishing specialty industry in the community: More and more local sailors are turning to him when they replace their sails.
