Susan is living with a French family in the south, and is teaching her language to the youngsters of the = : a family. about her trip and experiences. BY SUSAN Naturally, one of the first France, was to have a good look at my dwelling place. As I have mentioned, it is a chateau, but it is not particularly. grand.. It is built of stone, with a roof of red tiles rounded and hollowed, as are all the houses in this part of the country: There is a courtyard in front, with a lawn beyond, the whole surrounded by a-high stone wall, which in places is studded with large chunks of evil looking glass. The courtyard is in front of the main part of the house, and there are two more wings beyond the wall, one on each side. In one wing live the two families who work in the fields. There is also a stable for the one work horse and a donkey which pulls a little cart for the children. to ride in. The other wing is unused and is where animals were once kept, I think. Beyond the buildings are the vineyards. which keep the chateau going, but at the end of the garden isa very busy high- way, which rather spoils. the . country. atmosphere. The chateau ‘itself is full of old: fur- niture and pictures, all appearing rather decrepid. Meals are somewhat different here to what I am used to. For breakfast, sorry, le petit. dejeuner, one has coffee or chocolate and croissants. Lunch © is the large meal of the day, eaten ‘in the dining room, en masse, at © about 2 p.m., and usually a hot: meal “despite the tremendous.. heat at noonday. Dinner for the. ‘children is ‘about 8 p.m., and for. -the adults not until 9 p.m., which certainly: doesn’t. leave. much of ‘the evening. “Research. Station. It is plunked on the table as is, no plate, and everyone just saws off what he wants, leaving crumbs everywhere. It is bought fresh every morning, unwrapped, and you see everyone riding his bicycle down the road with about five’. long ‘protruding from a basket behind. There is always wine on the table, but here the water is. drinkable and although the children very “oecasionally havea dash of wine with their water, they are by. no means Faised on it from birth as I had thought was still true of all enfants francaise. portation.
