MacNeill, 1492 Land’ s End Road, has gone to France to learn the language “‘as she is spoke.”’ Susan is living with a French family in the south, and is teaching her language to the youngsters of the family. This is the second of a series of accounts Susan is writing about her trip and experiences. BY SUSAN MACNEILL The instant our. plane touched down in Paris, buses were rushed to meet it. We were all shepherded onto them and driven to a waiting room, where we were arranged into groups as to where we were . Boing. It was certainly a far cry from Montreal... Most of the hostesses spoke English cand were very nice. I was the only one going to Marseilles and must have looked a little lost, because a charming man, “who looked like Omar: Sharif and spoke excellent English, - came to my-aid and directed me to all the proper places. Then I had an hour to wait for my Air Inter flight to Mar- seijles, and spent it surveying the world as it passed by. Everyone..was very smartly dressed. There were quite a few pant suits and a couple of midi skirts, but the latter were conspicuous by their absence. ~The little boys were all wearing the most diminutive “shorts and. looked: perfectly sweet. Everyone was. very: dark and I really felt that 1 was. at last. In France. The plane | to Marseilles was _ absolutely. overflowing. with | French businessmen. We * taxied about on the runway for five minutes: and just'as_ Te - tholight we ware about to take off, the plane ground to a halt “and the stewardess announced that, due to the. Air Control “strike, there would. be ‘a-half- “hour. delay. I’ spent ‘this time. yNeinly searching for the Eiffel Tower on the horizon and am’ “very. disappointed to. ‘report ~ that: I caught not. even. a- hour late at: : Marignane. air-, oi port, which - was absolutely. ‘ ~ boiling. Naturally, just as 1 was about to leave the. "plane, the strap on ‘my “handbag”’ ey ~ (the 121 pound one) broke; so i made’ my’ ‘grand entrance - “with it tucked. uncomfortably “under my arm.1 went straight - to customs, “which was vir- | “tually empty and immediately discovered my luggage. Iwas : very relieved about this, ‘as, at. Pat Bay Airport, I had. been. - told that I'd have to go through Customs at Paris: -whereas ati “Paris: I'd been informed. that» “my luggage would go straight.” through to Marseilles and I'd had a nagging ‘little ‘feeling: since leaving Paris, that -~perhaps all. my. stuff, was waiting at. Orly “Airport (Paris) for me to claim it.” I now steeled) myself to go’. through Customs. The ordeal was. quite. something. A woman jabbered something at me, $0} Jooked her straight in the eye and announced -elearly, *Je one comprends pas”. whereupon she slowed down somewhat’ cand 1. “managed. to catch the words, cigarettes, parfums,..and- gathered that: she Wal asking. me if f had-any such in my, - lugeage: a} replied very firmly: cand in my best French ‘rien’. She promptly waved me "through without my having to. tnlock either. of my cases. 4 “am sure it wil be a somewhat different ‘story, when 1 leave. “Twas metal Customs by the. “family: with whom loam . flaying for a few months and “we set off for their home nea “Tarascon, ‘about an hour's 3 I ‘drive from: Marseilles Tt was quite aride AU the cars are very. small and rather tinny and some of them look rather ‘Ahe) converted: tanks. from World WarTL, Everyone used dis horn incessantly and we ‘Went whizzing along through Letters Home From France * WPAMUTEAUAGHEHEDOUANEDOAUSUUENDEONUSGEGEUANSENEOGADODSESUODLGDGEUUSSODOIUDRSUSOOUESELSOHHETINGDHE Ey was Offered to me in French, and my French is not too fluent to say the least. We arrived at their chateau after passing through several small villages with narrow cobbled streets. It is in the country, surrounded by vineyards and very old, as is everything ..around- here. Aithough it was 1 -p.m.here, it was 4a.m. forme, so 1 thought Thad better have a slight nap. However, this was easier said than done. I had forgotten that such heat was. possible. It brought back vivid: memories of nights in Australia when we would retire. to. bed with sopping. wet flannels filled with ice cubes to: try and assuage the heat. I-was pretty tired though, so after an hour or so drifted off and had a gocd fourteen hours sleep, after which I felt somewhat. better. and ready to face. whatever the future might hold. — A CHILD LEARNS TO SWIM Le ; This is the eighth lessor to swim.
