PAGE FOUR Wednesday, August 19, 1970 Bus Versus Car While Saanich Peninsula threatened with the loss of public transportation, Victoria Mayor Courtney Haddock has entered a plea for the introduction of low-cost rapid transit ‘buses as a means to relieve probable downtown traffic strangulation. According to the theory behind the thought, it ~ needs only a fast and reliable bus service between -surburbia and town to induce the worker and ~ potential shopper to leave the car at home and ‘become a contented fare-paying passenger. As an added deterrent to individual driving ef- fort, it has been suggested ~ long-term stays should be greatly increased. - Many harrassed motorists will be inclined to the view that the idea of a rapid transit bus service is fine. for the other fellow. It would clear the road of amass of. lively competitors in the twice- daily - traffic maul. ~*~ But the imposition of. inflated parking charges would. likely. divert more busihess from the ~ downtown’ stores to the outer fringe of shopping centres, thus hastening a trend that is becoming : “even more noticeable. Whatever may be the’ ame may be. said for his. ‘unlikely in this day. traffic congestion, it should be recognized that the.
