For the second year running, Garden City Horsemen’s
Club is planning an event designed to show up stamina and
condition. of horses and riders.

A competitive endurance ride will be held on Sunday,
September 20, starting from Beaver Lake ‘“‘Flats” next to the
Patricia Bay Highway.

- Route of the ride has not been announced but much of it is
expected to be through the back roads and trails of the
Highlands district.

This year’s ride will be 40 miles as against 25 last year, and -
there will be a number of other changes as well.

A 25-mile route will be offered junior riders (12 to 16 years,
as at Jan. 1,.1970) and there will be two divisions in both’
senior and junior sections — lightweight and heavy weight.

All horses carrying less than 15 per cent of their own weight
will be placed in the lightweight division, and all those
carrying 15 per cent or more will be heavyweights.

check after the horses have been given a 30-minute rest stop.
_ The rest will be compulsory. If the horse checks out
satisfactorily (proper recovery on respiration and. heart
beat) the rider will be allowed to continue. If the check does
‘not show satisfactory recovery, the horse will be given a
further half-hour rest and checked again. At that point the
entry will be allowed to continue or be disqualified.

Still another check will be made at the three-quarter point
of the ride. If the horse passes the check, the rider will be
allowed to continue immediately.

Two more checks will be made of the horse before results
are compiled and winners named. There will be a check as

soon as the horse finishes; and another two hours later to
show the recovery rate of the animal which could lose as
much as 100 pounds through dehydration. on a 40-mile trek.

There will be times posted at the start of the ride for both
seniors and juniors and there will be bonus points awarded
for times faster than that posted and penalty. points for

slower times.

There will be penalty points on conditionat the various vet

checks’ also.

Prize money will be awarded to fourth place in each of the
four divisions, based on a percentage of entry money. There
will be trophies and ribbons as well.

The awards will be given to the horses with the fastest
times and the least number of penalty points.

Entry fee will be $10 per horse.
