Wednesday, August 12, 1970 PAGE FOUR Rural Trails Any official move to assist the healthful pursuits of trail riding and hiking is worthy of encouragement. It is therefore of interest to note that the Capital Region District Board is considering the maintenance of per- -- manent trails in Thetis Lake area and between Elk- Beaver lakes and Mount Douglas Park. It is reported also that Deputy Minister H. G. Me- Williams of the provincial Department of Recreation and Conservation has stated that he can see no dif- ficulties in the way of District Board involvement in such projects. He is quoted as saying ‘“‘We would be _. prepared to authorize grants in aid of trail acquisition and development. ” This is all to the good, but the program should be _ expanded to the opening of a trail northward from Elk ~ Lake along the spine of Saanich Peninsula. This route should not encounter insuperable obstacles at the present time, although every year that passes may. add “to the difficulty of obtaining a continuous right- -of-way.. ~-»the utmost value in the further development o of trails as = a a provincial government assisted project. . f . Just like one of those coin- operated cleaning machines with a window in the front,.is how she described the experience. The personal ideas are twirled and whirled about, all topsy-turvy, as the garments are in the machine. This mother, schooled in England in the 1920's, says she once tried to teach a son about courage and obedience by telling him the story of the boy who stood upon the burning deck, whence all but he had fled. _ Review readers who may have forgotten this appalling “‘poetic’’ effort by Mrs. Felicia Dorothea Hermans, 1793-1833, will find: it under the title of Casabianca. It’s the true story of the death of a 13year-old boy whose father was admiral of the Orient in the battle of the Nile. The father told the son to remain at his post. The ship caught fire, the admiral was killed, everyone left the. ship except the ‘noble boy’’ who would not desert his post without his. father’s permission. He stayed there until the ship blew up and the boy with it. Like many others of her | type and generation, my friend - now sixtyish -- was. taught this” -ap- palling ‘‘poem’’ as a child. It didn’t impress her Canadian- born son when he was :about:13.- Indeed, his comment was, ‘‘The guy was retarded, huh?” The other story she tried on him once was about the Spartan boy whose father sent for him. knew he shouldn't have, so he-hid himunder his jacket. While the: -boy stood listening to his father, the cub gnawed away at. the child’s vitals until the: boy. fell dead without uttering a sound of pain. A real little Stoic!
