Gongs will announce the en- trance of-a prancing Chinese lion ‘on Beacon Avenue this Saturday as traditional Oriental festivities, with spitting firecrackers, mark the formal opening of Engcraft, . Sidney’s newest store. A preview of this spec- tacle which starts at 10 a.m. and will include ceremonious ribbon-cutting by Acting-Mayor Wilkie Gardner and performance of several Chinese skills, has been afforded window-shoppers this week. Many have been intrigued by the piles of fire-crackers (not.for sale) in the windows of Engcraft, by the fiercely-painted lion, and by the exotic costumes spilling - out of camphorwood chests. VARIETY OF INTERESTS Engcraft proprietor is the 26- year-old son of Mr.-and’ Mrs. Eddie Eng of Beacon Cafe. Victor Eng has accumulated a bewildering variety of interests and has a strong enthusiasm for community affairs. As an_ athletic youngster, he represented Peninsula schools and looks forward to working with young people in the future. An extension of a successful wholesale business, Engcraft ‘reflects its owner’s interest in health foods. Many people eat improperly, says Victor Eng, and _ indulge in the wrong foods. Chinese food supplies are also. Stocked and Eng plans to give a course in Chinese cooking during the winter. His» pride in’ his. heritage is evident in the varied display of. ornaments and: Oriental - souvenirs. A meticuluous: businessman -with a flair for systemal design, Victor Eng plans to analyse food. ‘costs. with: the -help. of some: Chinese. assistants. “At ‘the moment, he is. completing .a ~course.in accounting municipal ; finance and administration. He is also a corporal in the-reserve force of Royal Canadian Artillery and belongs to the military band in which he plays the glocken- spiel. In past years, Eng has been a five-pin bowling instructor and judo enthusiast. He enjoys electronics and has, in the back of the new shop, a printing press with which he hopes to ex- periment in .‘‘spare time’!
