PAGE EIGHT SAANICH PENINSULA AND GULF ISLANDS REVIEW 120 Cars Expected At Langford Oval ‘Two days of road racing sanctioned by the International Conference --of Sports Car Clubs are planned next month on the one-mile circuit at Langford’s Western Speedway. The dates are July 4 and sand running the events will be the Victoria Sports Car Club. Organizers expect at least 120 entries from as far east as Ontario, and south to Oregon and California. “It will be something we’ve never seen here before, the organizing committee promises... Highlight of the meet will be a Grand Prix race sponsored by radio station CKDA. It will be held on the second day, open to the 17 fastest qualifying formula cars — the Formula ‘B’s, Formula ‘Fords’ -and Formula ‘Vees.’ The Grand Prix will be sixty laps and should produce the hottest ‘racing the oval has ever seen. Open practice and novice races will be held starting at noon on the - first day, and there will be eight feature races on the second day in- “> cluding the Grand Prix. Benny Swain, BY LORI WELLS Rick O’Dell piloted his “hungry”’ Dodge into the -winner’s circle for his third main event win of the season last Saturday at Western Speedway before 2,578 fans. O'Dell took the lead'from Ken Alexander on lap 31 of the 35 main event, after Alexander suffered a slight bump — that ~ caused him to lose a little time. Racing was hard and fast throughout the evening, with 22 of the 24 cars finishing the main event. Fans were brought to their feet during the fast heat, as Ross Surgenor charged after Larry Walker while coming around for the checkered flag — beating Walker out by just inches. Victorian’s showed just well as visitors last Saturday, as Gary Kershaw had a clean sweep at Yakima, and Roy Smith picked up a win in the fast heat, then went on to victory in the main event.
