erate ieee oe, sr a as SAANICH PENINSULA AND GULF ISLANDS REVIEW Seems every time there’s a renewal of the controversy over the Canadian content on our radio and television stations poor old Den Messer gets it in the neck. There’s. always. a critic who'll say, “If you dictate Canadian content you'll get Don Messer until he’s coming out of your ears.” Apart from it being nonsense it angers me for another reason. I happen to think, you see, that Don Messer and his Islanders is a great, enduring experiment in ‘modern-day entertainment. REAL PEOPLE At first glance the Islanders may strike che casual viewer as nothing rnore than a bucolic little musicale. Yet the. perceptive critic (namely, me) will discover that for years it has broken new ground in several directions, notably in its use of a cast of real people. By real ‘people I mean. people made of human flesh as opposed to those glittering, glamorous, beautiful, superbly-posed, make- believe’ shadows .we normally associate. with © Televisionland. As. a_ further definition, real people are people who do not show 64 perfect, smiling teeth when they talk or ‘sing, who are not gifted. with a jaunty or inde-: ~ structible insouciance or who are laughing” GET READY FOR IN ‘THE SUN WITH SANDALS. No. candelabra light him. We do not see gigantic blow-ups of his fingers madly dancing on the strings. He is just Brother Don, a real good old ‘fiddier: He is, in . short, believable, which is, as they say, a television first.
