Club, when they gathered on May 2 for two treats. one of them. a most. interesting garden talk by P.G. James, our own Gulf Islands Horticulturist from Salt Spring Island. The other was the unveiling of an illuminated plaque of the Charter members of the Hall Club, and introduction of pioneer members on hand. -Mr. James has an inimitable way of immediately: holding his. audience. He was a horticulturist in the Okanagan in the 1930s, and his parents lived at Parker Island from 1912 to 1920, so he has a deep interest. in ‘he Islands. He says that the soils on the Islands vary considerably, but are mostly sandy loam. . The flowers are. well ahead of last. year, with trees outdoing themselves with a profusion of blossoms. Fruit trees are difficult to identify on the Islands. said Mr. James, as they were brought here by the pioneers, and many are not. known. -°Tom.= Carolan, thanked Mr. James for. his. talk and: advice, -and asked the audience to hear’ the names of the charter mem- bers on. the illuminated plague. unveiled by Mrs.C, 0.
