Scouts from all packs in the area set up the program at the big cub rally held last Saturday at. Cen- tennial Park, When [arrived on the scene at noon the kitchens were packed with cubs; scouts, venturers and leaders, and also a few parents who braved the rain. Boys. were downing hotdogs like they were going out of style...and still the rain kept pouring down. The adults huddled in corners looking out at the rain and mud, but the spirit of the: cubs was typified by young Chris Flint, who came to his leader-father and said “‘Come. on Dad, a little rain won't hurt. us. Let’s get: going.”’ So off went the mob i in the downpour. Slightly damp boys had a wonderful time as they. tackled monkey bridges, rope mazes, scramble net, commando bridge, life line, swings, stepping stones and swinging rope; attempted to climb a slippery pole and conquor many.. other. obstacles.’ All. the obstacles had been prepared by their seniors. Highlight of the day was the aerial tram. Boys stood patiently in line to ascend the ladder to a platform 35-feet above our heads. From ‘there they sat in‘a a swing- _type seat and slid safely back: to earth. During the years that Lyn Hancock has taughtschool she has used animals extensively in the classroom. She pointed out that the animals were not utilized for teaching the science course. but also for art classes, social studies (where studies were done on countries of origin), and even in. mathematics when the chil- dren maintained graph. charts recording growth and develop- ment data. For the keeping of these records it was necessary for the children. to learn the metric system, thorough knowledge of weights and measures, in order. to measure food requirements and growth factors. She also showed dramatically the effect on the teaching of English, by reading and showing some of the poems and stories composed by the:children about | the animals in their classroom. If there was a single important message stressed it -was. the absolute need for ‘‘involvement.”’ In Lyn Hancock’s own words, “‘If you can get the children terested and INVOLVED, there is no ceiling to what they can jearn!” - ‘programs in fisheries since the | for, Yukon,.
