SY aes ie Wednesday, March 4, 1970 SAANICH PENINSULA AND GULF ISLANDS REVIEW PAGE NINE: Beauty Combines WithWrittenWord ‘dainty, At Sidnev Library We are fortunate to have a gardener of -o small ability on the staff of the Sidney branch of the Vancouver Island Regignal Library. The reader in search of information or literary escape is also rewarded with beauty in the form of delicate floral arrangements regularly con- tributed by Librarian Susan Thuillier. Her collections are unusual and lately she has shown the exquisitely fragile Bavarian Iris Stylosa, botanically named Unguicularis. This is a difficult plant. to grow. but once established presents the owner with. a continuous harvest. of mauve. blossoms throughout January. A few of -these ina slender vase are a delightful adjunct to‘any dinner table. A rare and exotic stranger to the library was seen recently. This was Tecophiliaea Cyanocrocus, also known as the Chilean Crocus. This tiny plant is native to the. Chilean Andes at 10,000 feet altitude and is of the deepest, gentian blue. The Government of that country now ‘fiercely protects this plant from , foraging botanists and the bulbs - are rare and costly. It is already » feared that a variant of paler blue with.a white throat has become extinct. ME VICTORIA EV 3-7532 OPEN At M R. spaNSoRRD BY FUND. G52-2100, ‘fireplace © for ‘Three. This year we can, with honor, justify an enthusiasm for a West Coast climate and jubilantly proclaim that floral offerings from our gardens have been available at all times throughout the season. In spite of Spring temperatures it is as well to exercise some restraint before galloping forth with spade and hoe in a flurry of energy. The soil is too soggy to walk upon without damage by compaction. Lawns begin to seem shaggy and unkempt. Don’t reach for the: lawnmower. yet unless to whisk it down to the shop for a tune-up. Mowing damp grass is a tricky. operation and the blades should be set high and very sharp. Prairie immigrants to our mild Pacific shores wistfully complain . that there is no rest here; that there are too few weeks in the year where a chair, a book anda crackling fire may. be enjoyed with easy. conscience. In fact, apart from spraying, pruning and a bit of edge trimming and draining, the. gardener. will be further ahead if he retires to his a session of: ‘research. and ... planning’. ‘Surrounded with sketch pad, his own garden notes and a wealth of ‘horticultural data and catalogues he can present a most legitimate picture of a busy man. This is sad in.a year when the early Rhododendron and Camelia buds are bursting with blossom. A very little protection, particularly from the morning sun on. frozen tissue, will save a bitter disappointment. Old sheeting, dark plastic or even 2 few beards will act as a baffle if the temperature threatens to drop sharply. This is a season of search and discovery. The first snowdrops, are wondrous creations set shades. Loveliest. of. all are the species crocus forming rich pools of many colours in rock garden niches. These are visitors from Greece and Asia Minor which, crushed beneath the heavy snow of last winter, were the first to burst into belated bloom when the thaw came. The deciduous trees have a special beauty silhouetted against a stormy sky.. Their branches are warm with chang- ing colour as the sap rises to give the young wood a glowing sheen. The novice should explore an ‘established garden and observe through the eyes of the owner for many-of the earliest blooms are hidden beneath a protective leaf cover.
