Hutchinson This is a most remarkable novel, perhaps tne finest of all the many -distinguished books written by R.C. Hutchinson. Unlike most of his other works, it is based on actual facts: It opens in Holland. in a home for refugees and stateless persons uprooted during the Second World War. One of the residents. Jahanna van Loezen is a woman in her late middle age suffering from a complete loss of memory of all that had happened to her before coming to the home. Her. present existence, however. is permeated by feelings of guilt. remorse and fear. with suicidal tendancies at times. Very gradually. by way of little pieces of evidence, and the stimulii from her contacts with the other inmates and with people outside whom the Director asks her to help, Johanna (and the reader with her) is brought to an almost complete realization of the traumatic experiences that led to her. amnesia. There is no sensationalism; no sentimentality. The book bears simple witness to the destructive effects which suffering can inflict upon people and from which, one is made to realize, there. can never be complete escape. The power of. Hutchinson’s BY MARY KIERANS Wednesday, March 4, 1970 imagination is almost beyond belief, so precise is the detail, and so consistant the whole ‘feel’ of the book. It is splendidly written, and quite unforgettable. Johanna at Daybreak is available from the Sidney and North Saanich Branch’ of the Vancouver Island Regional Library.
