By Norma Sealey “Acid’’, “‘speed’’, ‘‘meth’’;- all part of the new vocabulary of drugs. But - What are they? What is their effect? And what should you do about them? Let us help you find answers to these and other questions per- taining to drugs. On Mon. Feb. 16, 8 p.m. in Sidney Elementary Schoo} auditorium, Sidney P.T.A. is. sponsoring a program in the public interest entitled: DRUGS - Use and Abuse. Other P.T.A.s in. the district have been invited to attend, and an open invitation is. also ex- tended to the public, as this is concern to everyone. The program. will include the Cool-Aid. film ‘Speed — Kills’’, concerning the use of meth- amphetamine drugs.’As of Jan. 16, this film had been shown lil times, to several thousands of persons, including P.T.A.s, youth groups, public health. officers, church groups, police officers, nursing students, social workers, municipal councils, and the Royal Commission on Drugs. An_ interesting and. informed panel will be present. including Charles Barber representing Cool-Aid, and Sgt. Bill Chisholm, ‘well-known for his ‘work: with Saanich Police Youth and Drug Squad.:He will-also.be bringing with him a very excellent display . . ~ board which the Saanich Police’ use for demonstration: of drug is’ John Nuttall, Special ‘Coun- and. the of. emotional and field of psychology, analysis ~ behavioural problems in: young - people, he should make a Breat contribution: to discussion. . * This meeting «will | ‘mark the “annual observance . of PTAL Founders’ Day. : with © “17>. thefts, on Saturday but. the: case has. been held: c Ver pendi ng. repo ‘ ‘Five juveniles who : are charged qe _ breaking-and- entering and property daniage in- ; Central and North Saanich, made: an appearance. in “Juvenile Court: OH, BUZZ OFF I suppose I could find im- pressive statistics. and official reports to document this week’s thesis -- that the automobile, as we know it, is headed for ex- tinction -- but I’d prefer to rest my case, my lord, on a very small item that appeared in-our local paper last week. The story concerned a Mr, George Oake who told the police that he brought his car-to a halt behind another car at a red light. The light. turned green, the car. ahead did not. move and so Mr. Oake sounded his horn. Three times, to be precise. The door of the stalled car ahead swung slowly open, according to Mr. Oake’s: complaint, .the driver emerged, walked deliberately back to Mr. Oake’s. car and punched Mr. Oake smartly upon his nose. As I say, I could research the thing :a little and produce some figures to prove my point, but why bother? Apiarists say that as soon as they get among. their ‘bees. they .can feel the — temper of the insects by the sound. of their humming cand I feel that after 30-odd years as a car driver I'vea similar sensitivity. to what’s happening’ in. the chive of motordom. Mr. Oake, as Tsee it, is a living symbol of a new age that’s already upon. us, an age in which: the automobile driver is in a perpetual state. of frazzled. ner- ning hatred for -his fellow. motorists. Like anarchy, I mean. “It so happens that, having ‘recently returned toa nine-to-five job, I acquired a new automobile, a vehicle at once beautiful and utterly impractical. cee _.
