Wednesday, February 11, 1970 SPARA ~SPARA stands for Saanich Peninsula Agricultural and Recreational. Association. It is the latest addition to a: long list of conglomerate — words by which a particular identity is established. Let us hope SPARA will become firmly fixed in the public mind soon, because SPARA has an objective that will fill an urgent need on the Saanich Peninsula. -SPARA has been formed to provide a permanent and central recreational centre for all of the people of Sid- ney, North Saanich and Central Saanich. Sidney Rotary Club has provided the spark by the ~ allocation of $10,000 on production of a plan of proven feasibility. The SPARA committee is confident that itcan ~ present such a plan, and bring. it to fruition as a Cen- tennial ‘71 ‘project. -The aim is an ice rink with skating and curling . facilities. It is realized that some > may prefer a swimming pool, - but close study of costs of construction and maintenance ‘have indicated that an ice surface is preferable as a pilot eS ~ project. For many years the young people of the Peninsula have had to travel to Victoria for skating, available only at the most inconvenient hours; there can De NO: question. as to the need. - SPARA is. in process. of registration under: Societies Act; and during ‘the next few. weeks members its committee will be. meeting. with the mayors and: inicipal. representatives, the respective recreational. and Centennial committees ervice Club: executiv es and the Chambers. of Commerce. — ‘The. support ofall. community: organizations: will ‘be nlisted; and the. appeal of SPARA will extend to all. community-minded people of the whole Se tiohe ee ‘the p beaver: overlooks one important actor. ‘The beaver does not use. ts voice. when disturbed, | : ‘Rather, nature has: provided ~ warn other beavers of danger, or, “= upan the ground to let them know. -, that he has finished gnawing ata tree and that timber. is about to: “fall, “The noise you hear right now is* made by — millions of irate - Canadian taxpayers slapping an ‘angry warning about inflation, Government: dictatorship, arrogant. legislation, wild | “spending, the CBC, ~CYC, -seperatism, subversion, the downgrading. of the Monarchy, ° “disintegration. of our Armed . Wilkie Gardner’s report from the Greater Victoria Inter-Municipal Committee. Commenting that the Committee is ‘really tough”’ on grant applications this year, Ald. Gardner explained that just two major causes will be aided. An operating grant of $5,310 was voted to Cool-Aid for its transient houses, (Sidney’s share is SILL); the sum of $3,000 went to Community Council with - about $104 coming from this town. Ald.
