I enjoy these grand- motherly years. when, with children grown, married and gone, there’s a little more time to track down interesting stories and information. Like, for instance the story. of the Whitworth Ranch in the Skagit River Valley. I heard of it through a casual remark about an historic ranch, the Whitworth Ranch, that was now under water. And, from a topographic map, I knew that just west of the Skagit River Valley is a Whitworth Peak. So, with these slight clues, and with the help of the staff in the Provincial Archives, I read the three newspaper cuttings in the Whitworth, Henry Robert, file. One was from the October 20, 1949 issue of the Kelowna Courier, Another was from the October 20, 1949 issue of the Vancouver Province. Both were obituaries ‘of Henry. Robert Whitworth who had died at the: age of 86. One of the few remaining survivors’ of ‘the Northwest Rebellion, he had emigrated to Canada in 1882, and, in 1904, operated a Skagit Valley cattle ranch which. was | sub- sequently sold to the. City of Seattle. Mrs. Whitworth had predeceased her husband in 1937: The third cutting was from the - Kamloops Sentinel. Whit- worth estate, known as the “nard: luck’’ ranch, had been purchased by the City. of. Seattle and’ soon : would be converted into a ‘giant lake. A power company, it added, had built:a dam. known. as the Diablo. Did we, through our elected representatives, refuse per- mission because this valley and its wildlife, fly-fishing streams and miles of spawning gravel were of great. value now to the exploding population of this general area, and would become increasingly valuable? No we did not. We chose the fast buck. In January, 1967, Seattle Light | was. given a 99 year lease so it could flood 6,300 acres for the measly compensation of $34,500. That’s peanuts.. A British Columbian must pay. $25 an acre to lease Crown Land on lake or river and the lease is only for 21 years. This. short-sighted, deplorable Skagit River scheme affects us here, too. For. that Valley ‘is an easy weekend trip. You turn off | the Cross Canada highway just ‘after Flood, and well short of - Hope, follow Silver Creek, pass Silver Lake reach the height of °- . land and then’ go .down into the valley. of the Skagit which lies _ below the 1700 foot contour.
