a) 7 " Trustee’ So: Acolumn on School District No. affairs, contributed bi-monthly by Saanich Peninsula School Cermer Trustees. Views expressed are those of the writer. by Mrs. R. Parrott A PARENT’S PLEA My little boy is eight years old. He goes to school each day. He doesn’t mind the tasks they set, They seern to him but play. He heads his class at raffia work, And also takes the lead At making dinky paper boats — But I wish that he could read. They teach him physiology, And oh, it chills our hearts To hear our prattling innocent, Mix up his inward parts. He also learns astronomy And names the stars by night, Of course he’s very up-to-date, But I wish that he could write. ' They teach him things botanical, They teach him how to draw, He babbles on mythology, And gravitation’s law, _ And the discoveries of science _ With him are quite a fad, They tell me he’s a clever boy, but I wish that he could add. . Overheard in a supermarket last week as. two mothers were shop- ping? Not at all. This little poem was written by the late Peter McArthur in his volume, “‘The Prodigal’; in 1907. note the date 1907. Yet it seems topical. From every side one hears criticisms and very little praise of today’s schools. Business claims the graduate cannot spell; parents claim the report cards do not tell them anything ; and . students claim they get turned off. Are these criticism fair? I think not. i believe the rea! problem is: insufficient communiciation between the public and the school. The public really does not know what is happening in the school, and the \- teacher gets too caught up in the classroom to “‘spread the word” to ~anyone beyond those four walls. This is a plea on my part for both the community and the educators : «to communicate more freely.: Parents. should visit their children’s schools more often. Do not wait for the Christmas Concert: or ‘Education Week. When you havea few spare moments, why not. give your school a call and arrange a visit. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised and continually amazed at'some of the things teday’s © ~ youngsters are learning and experiencing in the schools of the seventies. Teachers welcome interested visitors . as public input is required as a balance wheel to keep the progress steady. ~ This kind of interaction can be a beneficial experience to both. the. visitor and the school. Some of our schools have developed ‘cultural Board, Tam concerned at how few people come to the. Board meetings.
