Saanichton School Sewer

Bill Triples

30 PER CENT INCREASE IN ASSESSMENT

BOARD OBJECTS

Saanich Peninsula School
Board was shocked on Monday to
find that the bill for sewering
Saanichton elementary school is
$36,000 instead of the estimated
$12,000.

Plans to include the small 130-
pupil school in the new municipal
sewer system are firm according
to Central Saanich Aiderman Ted
Clayards. Bryan Shaw, building
and grounds superintendent, said
that. the monies provided in the
last referendum covered $12,000
expenditure which is the price of
an adequate portable. sewage
treatment plant similar. to that
used in Deep Cove elementary or
“acontribution’’ to the new
sewer.

Board members .wanted to
know if. the School District had
agreed to be included’ in. the
system -which is. nearing
completion.

Trustee Gordon Ewan said that
in meetings with Central Saanich
Council, Board members. had
agreed it was advisable to”
include schools in sewer systems
where they existed. ‘‘However
our schooi isin the middle ofa
rural. zone where manure. piles
can drain into ditches ....”’
protested Ewan.
