a \ Into The Back Seat. I We’ve never been strong enthusiasts of Prime Minister Trudeau’s bilingual, bicultural western front - particularly considering the expense involved in such trivial exercises as designing and constructing new signs for British Columbia’s Bureaus de Poste. Our feeling has always been that much of this, in a practical sense, was unnecessary. In spite of this attitude of mild disagreement we have refrained from becoming involved in the emotional side of the debate - primarily in a spirit of tolerance. ~ Receipt of a new Federal Government publication, however, has finally aroused even our emotional ire. Entitled Opportunities For Youth and distributed by the Department of the Secretary of State (remembered for its French language celebration of Dominion Day), the book is a catalogue of projects to be funded by our government in 1972. What got to us was the blatant over-doing of the French orientation with which this tax-supported publication has been put together. We've alwasy been of the opinion that a place name was a place name; and were thus surprised to find British Columbia listed as Colombie- -Britanique in the French portion of the book. ~ Inqually redundant, we thought, were such translations as Region de la Vallee du Fraser, Ile Saturna and Lac Williams - plus the peculiar mix of Ie East Thurlow. . ae This mild concern at Bureaucratic bumbling, however, turned to something entirely different when - on turning to the Quebec section of the volume - we discovered no similar translation into English. Abitibi-Ouest remained Abitibi-Ouest and Baie Ste- Catherine was still Baie Ste-Catherine. Bois-Francs, Cap-De-La-Madeleine and Chicoutimi-Nord were left for English speaking Canadians to work out for themselves. And, not surprisingly, Montreal was listed nowhere as anything but Montreal. As we Said before, we are willing to hold silent for a. certain amount of wasteful spending over this issue, but we will not stand. still while a group of federal Francophiles move too far in the other direction — toa point where our ma jor language i is moved into the back seat.
