Pritchett was headed for Paris at 21, putting behind him his lower- middle-class London boyhood and a four-year stint in the leather trade, to which he had been whimsically apprenticed by his chronically bankrupt father. “I had little romping notion of ‘seeing the world’ "’, he says as he arrives at the Gard du. Nord at the beginning of MIDNIGHT OIL, “in -a disorderly way, 1 quite seriously wished to be taught.” He wanted to be a writer but wasn't sure how it was done. He supposed all writers were learned men and that his lack of education might be a fatal handicap. Looking in bookshops on the Boulevard S. Michel, he saw not only English literature TIPS FOR BARBECUING FISH © 1, Bring fish .to room tem- perature before barbecuing. 2..The easy way to place fish on the barbecue is to use an old- fashioned toast rack or hinged, wire barbecue rack (available in’ many. sizes) to hold the’ steaks or fillets. Oil the toast rack or wire e grill well with cooking oil. Place the fish to be cooked on.-| - the rack, then on the barbecue «grill. This way the fish can. be turned simply by flipping over. the rack thus preventing “sticking or breaking of the fish. (See accompanying photograph.) 4. If not using the. wire rack to hold ‘the fish, brush. the ‘bar-. _becue well with oil first,:then.. again after turn of the fish. ~ 5. I could not see that I had anything to say except that I was alive.” MIDNIGHT OIL is as: unlike any other writer's recollections of starting out in Paris in the 1920’s as ‘A Cab at the Door’ was unique among memoirs of Ed- wardian London. Pritchett didn’t live on the Left:Bank; he never met or even heard of Joyce or Fitzgerald. Hemingway | or Gertrude Stein. Instead, at Christian Science meetings this father’s faith), he met Americans who ‘‘suggested, as many polite Americans did at that time, a society fixed in the past. The sensation of joining a previous age of gentility was a novelty to me who had been brought up in vulgar England and in a family where manners were unknown, where everyone shouted, and no one had any notion of taste, either good or bad. We lived without it.”’ He worked as a photographer’s successful salesman: of . glue, shellac and ostrich feathers. His trades. is .clear-eyed and —un- sentimental. He has, too, the gift people he met without turning them into ‘‘characters’’ - par- ticularly an astonishing bank clerk afflicted with a desire to throw over everything and go on the. stage. married to a: short woman with a heavy bob of white hair and a duck-like bosom which she seemed to carry about as if it were a personal tragedy.”’ ‘Looking back on his life at the age of 70, Pritchett says: ‘‘I shall never be.as old as I-was between 20 and 30 when with its deceitful energy, my young body carried a pained, fogged and elderly mind across France,. Ireland, Spain and the Tennessee mountains on foot.” Yet the impression he gives is of a lively, vulnerable, watchful nature. The young man in this book is very likeable, and his. older self even more so. Pritchett writes without vanity of his literary career, unaffectedly of his loves, and quite movingly, toward the end, of the death of his parents. His autobiography. is very entertaining, but the best thing about it is that -we’re in touch with a-sane. and genuine man. Both volumes of “his memoirs, ‘‘A Cab at the Door”’;.and his new book, MIDNIGHT OIL, are available through the Sidney - North Saanich Branch of the of catching the oddity of, the Regional Library.
