Sam on Christmas Day, Sam and
I- had. known’ each other since
early Spring, in fact for.a while
used to. see each other
every weekday at noon and once
in a while on. Saturday’s when.
Brian and I would run from the
YMCA down through Beacon Hill
Park and past his pen. Saturday.

saw him. He was rarely in the
same spot and even with knowing

I never once lost the. thrill of

seeing him. Even half dead
from that run a little tingle would
whistle up) my — backbone
whenever his horns came into
view and there he would: be.
watching me as I thumped past
the wire.

When autumn came his coat
lost that red summer. glow and
took on its buck winter greyness.
A sort of brown and bullet grey
mix that: made vit virtually
impossible for a town dweller to
pick him out unless he moved.
Because of this I would puff by

for my arrow.

The following Monday.T met up
with. Sam. again in the park.
He seemed to be mocking
me: in any event he turned his
back; 1 didn’t swing past. his
cage on the return leg of the run.
It. would. have.’ been. too
humiliating. An old Indian on the
Cole Bay reserve once told me
that deer are special creatures
with their own spirits, which is
why he prayed before going after
them and that day in the park I
suddenly knew what he had been
