farm business, moving to their
present -home on Lands

Sidney Diver

A Sidney diver who last year
made. a dramatic rescue of a
drowning man, recently
discovered a store of-rum in a 40
year old naval wreck. And during
the same dive he almost lost his
own life.

Doctor lan Buckingham, who
practices locally, joined up with a
team of divers. from. the
University” of - Victoria on .the
November. 11th weekend when
they journeyed up to Barclay
Sound to dive on HMCS Thiepval.

This minesweeper came to grief
on February: 27, 1930 while on
winter patrol north. of . Turret
Island and now lies-in 80 feet of
water. |

Doctor Buckingham
discovered. a number of rum jugs
stored away in the foc’sie of the
wrecked ship. ‘A lot. of divers
had been in there before us,” he
told The Review. “But I doubt if
many had lights with them. They
are an absolute must if you want
to see anything inside that
wreck."’

During the dive Buckingham
and a companion swam into the
interior. of the wreck to explore
the engine room. “I must have
jarred one of the hatches,’ he
