Ken Franklyn - of « Brentwood said he could neither understand the attitude of members of the Ratepayers’. Association or Council’s reaction. The op- portunity to acquire the water- front property should be taken in spite of the narrow-minded at- . titude displayed and the negative attitude of the press, he declared. Ted Martin said the property was probably worth $53,000 for residential purposes, ‘‘but not for what is proposed.’ He. gained from Alderman Tom Michell the admission that the million tons of gravel said to be in reserve was ‘an exaggerated estimate. Ald. Margaret. Salt was. con- cerned at the probable main- tainence costs of the proposed . park, labelling the $300 estimate of one alderman as “‘ridiculous’’. While. In his earlier analysis of the situation, Mayor Galbraith said that Ald. Stanlake had met with Mr. Bolster to discuss the possibility of holding the property in order to give Council the op- portunity of considering it along with other available: properties. He had acted as a taxpayer and not as an alderman. Subsequently Mr. Bolster with Mr. Dawson and Doctor McLister had bought the property with the intention of offering it to the municipality at the price they had paid, plus legal fees, taxes -and bank interest incurred i in the interim. “This was pureiy the action of three public-spirited businessmen,” said the Mayor. Royal Canadian Legion observed the eleventh day of November, in common: with the rest of our Country, in the manner in which it has observed it for many years. Our geography makes it a little more difficult for us than for most branches. The Isiand’s War Memorial is on one island .... the ferry. service makes it more convenient for us to hold. our meetings, and also the major part of our observation of this day, on another island. The first part was observed at St. Mary Magdeline’s Church on Mayne Isiand, where almost all our Mayne Island members. fell in at 0900 hours to lay a poppy wreath: at the Lych Gate, our branch’s War Memorial. The wreath was laid, with due ceremony, by the. Branch President. Following that,:a fast hop by water taxi to Saturna, and, in this BRENTWOOD NOTES Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Bob Sauerberg for his-most excellent service, as only by this means can we hold the service at. 1100 hours. The branch fell in in front of St: Christopher’s Church at 1040 hours. It was pleasing to note that considerably over. half: our membership was on parade, and that eight of our twelve First War veterans were there. Two are more or less: permanently in hospital, and two were absent from the area. We filled half the church, and the other half was filled by Saturna residents. The service was conducted by the branch padre, the Revd. John Dangerfield, M.B.E., and Mrs. Warlow was organist. The Colour Party consisted of the President, and Comrades Alan Lockie and Jack Nightingale. The President acted as Parade Marshall at both services. Later, we retired: to the Community. Hall. at Saturna, where we drank the Loyal Toast to our Sovereign, and the Silent Toast to those of our comrades who are no more. The balance of the afternoon, until ferry time, was devoted to food and entertainment, and .... reminiscense, both sad and happy memories. Any show derfiands some organising, and we cannot close without giving thanks to those who made the day possible, to our permanent ‘‘Ration Fatigue”, the ladies of Saturna, who were also assisted on this occasion by some of the ladies of Mayne, to Mrs. Warlow at the piano, and to Comrade Don Balsillie, who spent many hours taping music to play, and particularly for this tape of ‘‘Last Post’, the “Lament” and ‘‘Rouse’’, for we live far encugh from the main- stream to make it impossible for us to have either buglers or pipers on parade. .“They shall grow not old;as we that are left grow old,- Age shall not weary them, nor_ the years condemn, At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, — We will remember them’’. ‘BILL BRAIN ROOFING c Repairs : FREE ESTIMATES © “ G52-2258 “sou PATTERSON ae BRENTWOOD z 652-2045 SILHOUETTE COIFFURES Oe ve “The fantastic Change” 7885 PATTERSON RD. for all seasons SAANICHTON, B.C. 652-3333 WALTER c ‘ STAUB, PIANO TUNING PMCY) | POPLARS COFFEE SHOP Prop: Ruth & Larry, : ov ANE-OUT ORDERS | ; way 1 ALW AVS A mes .
