General Tedlie and his wife Margaret.came to Sidney three weeks ago from Eastern Canada where General Tedlie had been serving with the Canadian Armed Forces. He has served with the Army for the past 33 years and is on retirement leave until the end of October when he officially retires, General Tedlie began his ‘career... beginning of. the Second World in the’ Army. at the War when he joined as a trooper. ‘inthe 17th Duke of York Hussars, a horse cavalry regiment con- cerned with internal security ‘in Eastern Canada. Twoards the end of the war he was promoted to Lieutenant- Colonel and was given command of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. At the war’s end he stayed on in Germany with the occupation forces and par- ticipated in the disarmament of Germany and the rehabilitation of the country. ‘‘We were responsible for separating the ordinary citizens from those who had committed war crimes and were wanted: by various countries,’’ he said. Their duties also involved getting schools started again and carrying out the administration of the city in which they were -posted. After’ a year’ in Germany, General Tedlie returned: to Canada and attended the Royal Military College in Kingston as a student. From there he was sent to Fort. Churchill, Manitoba where he was commander of the Canadian Forces Arctic Ex- perimental] Establishment. “Tt was a fascinating job,” he said. ‘‘We were working with the R.C.A.F.,..the:. Navy, — the American Army Arctic team, as well as with civilians from various disciplines.” They. were involved in cold. testing: all American. ‘and Canadian ground’ force equip-' ment, the effect of temperature and wind on jet engines, the ef- fect of cold on. human. beings, Arctic clothing, mosquito control: and. all aspects of Arctic living. From there General Tedlie returned to Ottawa as director of Arctic and. specialized warfare ‘and then spent’ 13 months:as a- member ..of the International Control Commission in Viet Nam. just after the Geneva agreements had been signed. After his tour of duty in Viet Nam:General Tedlie. attended. the National Defense: College for senior Canadian. of-. ficials and then spent two: years Prairie Command. : out there. | pee ie was” ~ fascinating,’ said - General. Major General and became Deputy. Cief of Defense Staff for intelligence and security. It was his last assignment with. the Canadian Forces and in his words ‘‘most fascinating.’’ He was right in the thick of the F\L.Q.. crisis and summed up by saying, ‘I have always had pride in the Canadian forces but I was never more proud than during the crisis." In preparation for. his retirement General Tedlie and his wife Margaret had come out to British Columbia and. after driving .all over the Island decided to settle on the Saanich Peninsula. . They. bought: some property on Ardmore in. North Saanich and are presently engaged in building’ a house there. Never one to stay uninvolved, General Tedlie agreed to co-chair the Peninsula division of the United Appeal with his friend, Gil Perodeau. The campaign will run from October: 12 through to Oc- tober 23 and at present can- vassers are urgently required. Bighty-four .canvassers are needed and each canvasser will only have to make about 25 calls. Also this year there will be no call backs.
