PAGE FOUR Wednesday, September 8, 1971 The Saanichton Fair Each year as more of the world we used to know changes into something less desirable, the Saanich Fair stands out further as one of those pleasant, nostalgic, and seemingly unchangeable excitements out of the past. This is not to suggest that it hasn’ t kept up with the times — it has. What is intended is the sincerest of compliments to the people behind this season’s annual exhibition and their ability to allow the fair to grow and improve without losing that essential flavour that is a country fair. It’s alive, loud and hectic to be sure — but it hasn’t yet acquired the frantic pace of big-city, dollar-grabbing carnivals — and we hope it never does. ‘Losing money on a crown-and-anchor seems somehow better when-the man across the counter is your friendly ‘neighbourhood butcher — and the proceeds are going to Rotary projects in your own community. At the very least it may. be labelled an unrealistic attempt to control the uncontrollable. | With respect to alcohol, B.C. law is an anachronism from an earlier age, Liquor, like it or not, is a significant _. part of our way of life -- more adult British Columbians drink than do. not. Their use of a: product that, in moderation, does them no more harm than the food they eat, will not be altered by repressive legislation, Only two effects are likely to be felt —- and neither ~ have anything to do with consumption of alcohol... — The ‘first, and most suspect, is that. this Jegislation constitutes an initial step in government control over the press — the thin edge ofa wedge which could be driven further. | ~The second effect will be a decline in the volume of news presented to the reading public, Newspapers depend on advertising for most of their yee revenue — the size. of your newspaper is. directly . ‘proportional to the amount of advertising it carries, Some newspapers will suffer toa greater degree than others, some may even be forced to cease publication. Thus, for what appears to be political expediency, our Provincial Government will succeed in limiting the dissemination of news. An eventuality usually associated only with totalitarian regimes — never democracies. With tobacco advertising the issue is not as clear.
