THE ‘REVIEW ¥ Wednesday, July 28, 1971 _ CENTRAL SAANICH MAYOR Archie Galbraith examines the Source of complaints by district residents that they are being exposed to noise pollution. Homeowners in a sub-division near the Hovey Road polo. field (which doubles‘as a’ model plane . airport) have complained that engine noise from the tiny air- craft is disturbing the sleep of shift-workers. Mayor Galbraith and council, equipped with industrial audiometer and tape recorder, attended a miniature fly-in last Friday to hear first hand the noise made by the radio controlled craft. Retiring to- the near-by sub-division, Alderman Percy Lazarz said he could hear the planes until ‘some kid fired up a lawn-mower and drowned all other noises out.” Club secretary Robert Durke said "that flying is only allowed 8 hours each week - all during mid-day or early evening hours. A decision on whether the municipalities nuisance by-law will be used to ban the flying will be made by Central. Saanich next month. FOR SERVICE AND QUALITY SPECIAL Canada Choice . SEALEY There were all kinds of ships taking part in the sail past along the Victoria waterfront and Victorians ‘turned out by many thousands” to appreciate the review. There: must have been close to a hundred thousand appreciative people there along ‘the waterfront; people who. un- derstand and like our ships and their ports; its something that gets into ones blood in a seagoing community even if not directly participant. There were the speedboats of the navy, the destroyers kicking up a big wash at their fantails and cavorting around, there were the larger ships of other countries such as maintenance and supply Australia. AH. with their crews lined up and, presumably. the crews could see the interested waterfront. The old “Beaver’’ was: .also there, receiving - favourable comment and it was noticed that she. .must.. have... received “signals” to stop her ‘“‘smoke”’ which lay along the route. for- thcoming by the big ships. At any rate it suddenly stopped perhaps because the replica used ar- tificial smoke. There must have been many thousands of dollars worth of binoculars and cameras in constant use, enough to make any manufacturer hopeful. There was also a van doing a roaring trade in soft drinks. & ice cream and those sort:of things. *t, IMPAIRED DRIVERS Saanich Reserve. appeared in Sidney court on July 20 and was. fined $300 or 21 days and four months restriction to driving for employment: on. charges of im- paired driving.
