Wednesday, May 12, 1971 THE REVIEW PAGE FIVE ‘Nineteen years.is a. goodly length of time in one occupation, especially. for someone who went into it for two weeks or so - just to help out. Mrs. R. Boutelillier better known to all her friends at the Saanichton Post Office as ‘“‘Helen’’, retired on May 6 as assistant to Postmaster Andrew Johnstone, the job she entered into casually on May 2, 1952. Helen Bouteillier was born. at Manitowaning, on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, going to Aber- deen Sask. with her parents while still very young - and it was there she took her schooling and continued - to Saskatoon for’ her teacher training. She returned to her.-home town to practise her profession. Here she met Bob, when he also took .a teaching position in Aberdeen. Bob and Helen: were married in 1931 and in 1934 took _ their first trip to Vancouver;'and ~ the West Coast. A side trip to Vancouver Island convinced them then and there that it would be a lovely place to spend their days. . _ During the war -years Bob left his position a as s school y Principal in ‘St. Aberdeen to join the Air force, and Bob and Helen‘ lived for a time at Clareshoim, Alberta, where Bob. was Airforce Education Officer; later going to Calgary, where he received his discharge in 1946.. They left in April of that year for Victoria and in July purchased property on Cultra Avenue: from Stuart Stoddart. (for many years associated’ with ‘the Saanichton Postoffice). The Bouteilliers built their home where they. have resided ever sinee - ‘‘One of the loveliest spots on. Vancouver Island’, says Helen. Bob and Helen have taken great: interest .in. church - and community work. Bob has long been organist and choir master. at Mary's Anglican Church, while Helen has been a. faithful member of St. Mary's A.C.W. through the years. It was in May 1952 that Post- master Nathaniel Gray. took: ill. and Helen Bouteillier was called upon to help out at the Saanichton Post office for a couple of: weeks. It was at this. time that Miss Essery married and left the postal service and Helen stayed on as assistant and “right- hand-man”™ to Mr. Johnstone. Helen's pleasant ways and ever-ready willingness to be of service have placed her in the highest esteem of all who know her, and she will be missed-at the post office, but she is wished many happy years in which to enjoy her retirment. : Mr..and Mrs. Bouteillier have purchased a -self-contained van, and are leaving next Sunday for a | two-month trip motoring through the: Western. This will be a-‘‘first’’ for both of. them. as neither has ever been away from North America. It certainly sounds as though Helen and Bob don’t. intend to let any “‘grass grow under their feet’’ in. their retirement. School Districts Agree To Saanich School District’ will no longer. share..supervisory. staff with Gulf Islands School. District but this: development has no connection with the rejection. by Gulf. Chairman Jack Armstrong this week emphasized that a meeting of the two Boards on Friday ended on.a friendly note. “Qur educational objectives are the same.’ he said. But he also said he was disappointed in the Gulf Islanders’ attitude and felt that Saanich District would not initiate further amalgamation attempts. 7 The. Gulf Islands.
