Then there is the Gold and Oyster Rivers and many streams full of trout the year round. Steelhead. only run from - December to late April. And there are countless lakes, the better known are Buttle, with trout to 7 pounds and Lower and Upper. Campbell, which produce excellent fishing. But most of the vacationists are out after salmon. There are the Bluebacks (immature Cohos) from May to July. The Coho from July to.October..Then there are. the Springs (Chinooks) that run from April to September and are : followed by the Winter Springs. And the’ biggest and most fighting fish of them all, the “Tyee, It’s actually. a Chinook salmon that has spent five years at sea and is larger than a Chinook. In fact a salmon has to be over 30 pounds before: it is called a Tyee at Campbell River. They run from July through September. _ Tyeeis actually an Indian word meaning chief. There are scores of them caught every week in the © Campbell River area when they are running. The fisherman might have al6-— foot runabout with an outboard, the usual salmon tackle, a -herring -strip--for -bait» and : probably a 30 pound test: line. But the -salmon’ he: catches, eligible for recognition in the ~ Tyee Club. Under -: the. ‘Tyee. Club rules salmon fishing becomes an ~ exacting sport. The Tyee must be - fished from a wooden rowboat no longer. than. 14 feet. (Veteran fishermen. will remember. them as the ‘Clinker built” boats, with Sg mete 2 On fe ee Sn Seer : ‘even ir it: is OVEr “vu pounds; IS noes -a ledge overlap to break. heavy seas.) A three horsepower outboard can be used to get you to and from the fishing grounds. Actual trolling must be done by rowing. No live bait is allowed, only artificial. lures, and the preference in these are a plug or a large wobbling spoon. Once you have hooked into a Tyee it can take you anywhere from 30 minutes te two hours to land the huge fish. A large net, rather thana gaff is used to boat the salmon. Reason being the fish might lose a few ounces of blood which might just put it under the Tyee mark.of 30 pounds. ~ Which brings up the types and ‘classes of buttons the Tyee Club issues for salmon caught under club regulations. There is'a round button. for Tyees caught on light tackle with line not exceeding a 30-pound test (very rigorously tested before the angler starts out. And there is a diamond-shaped button for fish caught on tackle not exceeding 20-pound test. The weight of the Tyee also designates the class of the but- ton. A bronze button for. fish 30 , pounds and up; silver for 40 pounds. and up; gold. for ..50 pounds and up; diamond for. 60 ‘pounds and up; and then comes the ruby for any Tyee 70 pounds or. over. So far there. have been : two ruby buttons awarded, one in “nA 7-fore ALL masse clan wmeltha 1947: LOD a ey72" pounacr- arnas wie other in 1968 for a 71-pound Tyee. There are also other special © buttons such as “Tyee Man.of the". Year”, for the -largest. fish; “Tackle Champion, for. the biggest on extra-light tackle; the. . ‘Daily Double’? for’ the . two. “biggest: of the day anda A special” Ladies S Championship. : And. while the. Tyees. don’t usually. start running until July there -are plenty of large Chinooks in June and also Cohos. - The Cohos are the real gymnasts of the sea: They jump, swirl in circles, tail-walk and. generally give the fisherman — ‘‘fish palpitations.” A light sea rod with a 15-20 pound monafilament line trolling a bucktail streamer, about one ounce of weight, will provide plenty of action if you tie into a Coho. They do not go much over 18 pounds although the record.,. caught in 1947, is 36 pounds. The Northern Coho running in. the fail, can run.15 - 20 pounds. On light tackle, that can be fun. © You can leave it up to your guide to find the best fishing holes for you. The Campbell River area, from the narrow Seymour narrows, through Discovery. Passage to the Strait of Georgia in the south, is the “freeway” for salmon travelling down the. coast. The. tremendous. sweep of waters through -this narrow passage creates eddies or pools, and that’s where the. action is. Your guide will tip you off.to the . April: Point pools, Copper Bluff Pool; Lighthouse Pool, and the intriguing one, Row-And-Be- Damned Pool, named long before outboard motors were a: part: of sport salmon fishing.
