Its first meeting place was the old Community Hall, now destroyed, at. the corner of Benvenuto. Ave. . and... West “Saanich Road. Very soon. the members were. busily. working for .the Red Cross’ and other patriotic societies. . In 1917, 1,124 garments and 240 pairs of socks were made for the Red Cross.:In 1918, 1,428. gar- ments and 289 pairs of socks were contributed and $1,055 was raised for the Red Cross and other public funds. For two years the Institute met in the old hall,-and ‘then. for another two years the old schocl house was used. It was soon felt that the Institute should havea hall of its own and a building fund was started in 1918. Worthington's articles concerns the Brentwood Women’s Institute and the building of the Hall just 50 years ago. In the year 1937 the West Saanich Institute’ changed its name to the Brentwood Institute. During the Second World War the Hall was fitted. up as an evacuation rest centre and the ARP and Rangers. had their headquarters there. Institute members sewed and knitted for the Red. Cross and provided regular donations in cash. The Institute gave prizes each year to the West Saanich School and to the home economic section at the Saanichton Fall Fair. Catering for the Saanich Board of Trade Banquet is an annual affair in the Spring and the big Turkey. Card Party is the chief function at Christmas time.
