Brack- man-Ker Mill at Shoal Jarbour, more of its history is contributed from personal recollection. BY EDNA MAY JOHN “‘Toketie’’ in vthe Indian language means “‘pretty"’, and it very. well describes this Shoal Harbour site of an ancient Indian midden on which in 1878 Henry Brackman built his General Store and opened the North Saanich Post Office. _The store was adjacent to his large warehouse and across the: road from his grist mill, which at that time was named ‘Saanich Steam Mills; Henry Brackman, prop.”’ A wharf extended 150-feet into Shoal Harbour ‘at this. pretty point. Among the- first ships to’ call here were the Maud, Amelia (Captain McCullough), Wilson G. Hunt, Enterprise, and the Rithet. All were sidewheelers excepting for the stern wheeler Rithet. The general store carried on a thriving business for 28 years, the regular customers ‘coming. from” as’ far away as: Cowichan, Salt Spring Island, Portland: Island, Mayne Island and Saanich. The day. account..books -are™ ‘still “preserved and make interesting reading. eo The first telephone in Saanich was ‘from: Brackman’s to. the George Breed’s Cross Road, now Mc- wm Dans SOL Tavish: Road, ‘then on into. Vic-: -toria, McTavish having the job of. _ keeping the line in repair. After many. years service to: the farmers the grist-mill closed and was moved to new premises in a Victoria. Mr. Brackman remodelled the “mill building into an attractive’ hotel.which: was managed from -°1893 to: 1905 by Mr. and Mrs. Alex : Wright and Tom Forfar,. ---brother:..of Mrs. oy Wrights. were ‘genial hosts,. they: “set an excellent table and had a. fine ‘“‘bar’’. Mrs. Wright and her brother Tom carried on for.a.couple of years, then Mr. and Mrs. Bowen took over the management until the closure of the hotel. On June 6, 1906, Henry Brack- man, generous and good friend to so many people died, leaving his share of the business to the Ker family. In- December. 1906; Francis Barron purchased the mill .site; including 4 acres of land, all buildings, hotel. and: hotel fur- nishings and all livestock for the sum of $3,250.00 cash. Interm receipt is still preserved. Finally, a notice appeared in the Colonist stating, as of Jan. 1, 1907, the hotel, store and_ post office would be closed, all property now being private. So ends an era, but the point of SEATED. .AT land is still, “Toketie”’. NORTH HOTEL.Back row. from. left: Mrs. Wright, Alex Wright and Elinor John.
