serious. deficiencies. in our
educational system, These
deficiencies are not necessarily
to be found in the administration,
the plant, or for that matter in the
teaching profession.

Having said that, where shall
we look for these grave

weaknesses? Would vou consider
with me some words which: John
Ruskin: wrote about. a century
ago: :

“And the entire object of true
education is to make people not
merely do the right things. but
enjoy the right things--not merely
industrious. but to love industry-
not merely Jearned but to. love
knowledge - not merely pure, but
to love purity-not merely just. but
to hunger: and thirst” after
justice.”

Ruskin .is. pressing. home a
point, of course, when he says
“the entire object of education’
but he is basically right in his
statement I believe, and so let us
search for the areas. which have
caused our system of education to
leave these ideals so far behind.
We must recognize. whether or
not .we find: it~ palatable. that

the social consciousness of us all.
This is to say, that if it lacks: the
ideals — Ruskin pointed to’ as
essential. those ideals are lacking.
