GUIDES PASS FRE TRAINING

On May. 27 and 28 the First
Sidney Girl Guide Company were
given a fire prevention display
‘by the’ fire fighting “service at
the airport.

The 30 guides were . shown
films and given demonstrations
of all aspects of fire. fighting.
Fires were lit and the guides
sprayed them with water and
carbon - dioxide — extinguishers.
The highlight of the two even-
ings occurred when they were all

There are not too many
people who at one time or
another do not dream of
having their own little ts-
land far from the con
plexities of a modern city.
Ed and Millie Dueck had
such a dream which be-
came a reality when they
bought Knapp Island in
i963,

“JT guess you might say
we Warted to get away from
the hustle and bustle of
city life,"’ said Ed Dueck.

Knapp Island is indeed a
long step trom the con-
gestion of today’s big ci-
ties. Its beautiful 50 year
old 12 room home is situ-
ated in solitary splendour
on 32 acres of greenlawns,
majestic trees and colour-
ful flowers. Hydre and
telephone cables link the
island to Vancouver Is-
land but the Duecks have
their own generating plant
to be used in case ofemer-
gency. They also have
three wells for water with
19,000 galions in a stor-
age tank.

has particularly fascinated
us about the island is tts

Knapp [sland was named
after Kempster Malcolm
Knapp, RN, a Naval In-
structor on H.M.S. Amer-
ica, who sailed on this
coast around 1845. The
next recorded reference to
the island was when it
was surveyed for Joseph
Qaudros, a native of the
Azores. He traded up and
down the coast until 1908
in the steamship Delta and
used the island as a base
of operations. Legend has
it that Knapp er ‘ Mosquito“
Island as it was referred
to was then purchased by
a Lady Stabb who saw pic«
tures of the island in an
English magazine and
bought it but never came
out to British Columbia,

In 1912 Knapp Isiand was
bought by Colonel LS. Har-
vey. He was the son of
James Harvet, pioneer Na-
nairnc merchant, and his
wife was a daughter of

head back to the kitchen
to make scones and tea
and have it ready for them
by the time they came up
to the house,”

In 1946 Knapp fslar¢ was

The Wind’. He used the
island as a summer home,
