BEBE The head of the Health Employers Association of B.C, says the province is holding its own when it comes to filling nursing vacancies, “We can get five in and one leaves, We're still be- hind the eight-ball,” said Gary Moser last week. Bui he estimates there is a still a province-wide shortage of approximately 600 nurses. One thing that hasn’t happened is a whole-sale exodus of nurses, as was predicted, stemming from the dispute over wages earlier this year. “There's been very lit- tle movement of people out of the province in the last six months,” said Nurses are recruited after trip Down Under Marg Petrick Maser, ’ “The enthusiasm for people to leave turned out to be not particularly merited,” said Moser, A three-year contract imposed by the province in -August gave nurses in- creases of 24 per cent, The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 19, 2001 - A7, MacKay’s Funeral Service Ltd. Serving Terrace, Kitimat, Smithers & Prince Rupert Trustees to switch to new phone system SCHOOL TRUSTEES have voted to try out a dif- ferent teleconferencing system in the board office. Five trustees represent areas outside Terrace and an improved phone system is wanted to allow them to dial in to board meetings when extreme winter weather keeps them from driving here, Hazeltons trustee Pete Weeber said the existing phone system is frustrating because he can hear only about half of what happens al the board mect- ing when he listens in by phone. “It’s a total nega- tive experience,” he said..- Trustees decided Dec. 5 to try out a system used by North Coast Distance Education. Maintenance superintendent Robert Gilfillan said if it works it may be possible to share the sys- tem, setting it up in the board office when needed. The alternative, he told the board, is to spend about $5,000 on a new teleconference system that might or might net work. “Tvs a gamble,” Gilfillan said, “You can put it in and see if it works.” Gilfillan said acoustics are hampered by the high ceilings in the board office and the L- shaped configuration of the board table. If less expensive options don't work, he said, it might be necessary to hire a sound engineer to study the problern.
