Government “and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU). George Heyman, 49, re- places John Shields who has stepped down as union pres- ident after 14 years. Heyman was a provincial vice-president - of BCGEU until taking up his new jab June 13. He has also been a first vice president of the Kitimat-Terrace and District Labour Council and is a the. council of the B.C. Feder- ation of Labour. Heyman moved from Ter- race to Vancouver in the late 1980s as his BCGEU involvement grew. His first BCGEU position came in 1978 when he was elected as a shop steward. Heyman became a provin- cial vice president of the BCGEU in 1987, He-takes over a union bit hard by government cuts that has resulted in a declin- ing membership. Predecessor Shields has several times wamed the NDP goverament not to take union support for granted. In his first speech given June 12 at the BCGEU con- vention in Victoria, Heyman said he'll fight more cuts to the public service and at- tempts to contract out jobs. “No politician — in any party — can expect the sup- port of BCGEU members unless they clearly demonstrate that they under- stand our issues, that they’re on our side, and are willing to support us the great ma- jority of the time.” Heyman is also a pub- lished poet and an avid run- ner.
