AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 29, 1997 The Mail Bag Dawn of a new community Dear Sir: The apathy to vote clearly has shifted from Thornhill to Terrace voters in the recent referendum. Three out of four Terrace eligible voters did not go near a polling place to participate in a decision of great magnitude for this area. On the other hand, 50 per cent of Thombill voters went to the polls — the highest { in its history. Residents of Thornhill generally understand, in the wake of the referendum, that ihe status quo cannot continue In- definitely. With the 5,000 population threshold soon to be reached, the next step, of necessity, is incorporation. At this point Thornhill residents may want to take a breather and start planning and budgeting. While it was convenient to live under the wings of the regional district we now must learn to stand on our own feet and start phas- ing out the existing format, In all likelihood we will not be able to start out with a $800,000 hall and a $560,000 dollar public works budget, as projected by the restructure committee. I would forecast a rather ‘lean - mean’ type of operation, No doubt, we will continue to need the assistance and guidance of the municipal affairs department and others in our planning. Yes, Minister Farnworth, the people of Thornhill have spoken. As a member of a goverament with a socialist doc- trine he will understand that the people’s will has to be respected first and foremost and that the implied caveat: Just leave us in Dear Sir: Having read the article by Jack Talstra and the article with quotes from Mr. Oldham in the Oct. 15 issue of The Terzace Standard, I am forced to respond. Mr, Talstra, you being a lawyer which is a strike against you right off the bat, should know better than to call the Terrace city council, your council. These people are elected to serve the people of Terrace, not you, You and the council voted to abstain from giving your- selves a raise until after a possible amalgamation. One would assume the reason was so you and council could as- sess the tax base and structure your raise accordingly. This is a move that would be typical of a parasitic bureaucracy. Instead of using the theoretical tax base ex- pansion to keep down and indeed even decrease taxes as She loves children Dear Sir: Re: ‘*Behind the Walls of Feminism,” Oct. 22 issuc. For the record, I do not hate anybody, least of all chil- dren. While I do not have any children of my own, I certainly do not hate children. The article goes on to say fortunately I will not have to work with any children. This also is not the case. The women’s centre is a place for women and their children. As a consequence I often come into contact with children and always enjoy these times. While I do not want my own kids, I do not hate children. I sincerely hope women and their children continue to come into the centre, without fear of an evil, child-hating ogre waiting there. The article also said I worked for the government. In fact, I have been on contract to the government, working for myself as a consultant. I have never been a government employee. Sarak de Leeuw, Terrace, B.C. James W. This is a community about to be born. The restructure committee’s job to prepare and sum- marize data with all its complexities was well done even though not many of us had the opportunity to digest it all. The cost of the study probably would pay for half of the sewer structure the taxpayers of Thornhill will soon face and try to find funding for. Amalgamation or not, Thom- hill will pay for the huge capital cost of their sewer system, a fact that was not pointed out during the referendum campaign, As for the future scenario of Terrace and Thornhill living side-by-side: I can’t foresee two feuding municipalities in competition with each other for industry and a better tax rate. In comparison, Vancouver and its adjacent municipalities in the GVRD secm lo get along fine. And so can we: Terrace, B.C, and Thornhill, B.C,, The natural boundary is still the Skeena River and there will not be any toll booths on the bridges over it. If further giants like Canadian Tire should move into the area soon, we all will benefit. In the meantime, come on over here and play a game of golf — and we do most of our shopping over there. Walter Boser, Thornhill B.C. Thornhill alone you say, you bureaucrats are trying to figure how much you can personally rake off for your own personal gain. If for no other reason, I will vote against amalgamation because I do not trust or view lawyers in high esteem, and would not want to be part of a communily that has chosen to have a lawyer nim its day to day affairs. Mr. Oldham, you come into the lives of good family people and tell them what is expected of them and how they should live. Many of the people you condemn for having old vehicles in their yards have lived that way for 20 or 30 years in Thombill and managed quite well on minimal incomes although still being able to pay their ever increasing taxes and supporting local businesses, Now you come along after a couple of years of a nice steady salary on taxpayers’ money and tell them they have to get with the program. What program? Yours perhaps. Or the Yuppie who wants to build a fancy home and sell out for a big profit and move on to bigger and better things. No thanks. I have lived at this address for over 20 years and raised five children, I have had good neighbours pass away and others move on but one thing they all bad in common was that they were just good people doing the best they could with what they had. What makes you and the burcaucrats you work for think you have the right of fashioning laws and regulations that make life harder on people who may be already financially strapped. You speak of anarchy. Persons like yourself are what creates anarchy and are more part of the problem then the cure. You speak of building regulations being enforced in the future. How do you think you are going to stop a person of minimal income from building a home for his or her spouse and children that is decent lodging even if it doesn’t measure up Yuppie standards. Remeinber, nobody wants to live in a shack. Everybody would love to own a $200,000 home. However everybody in our society isn’t paid from the backs of the taxpayers. . Alan Grier, Terrace B.C.
