It's new to Terrace, but it's attracting lots of attention. High flyin’ fun SOMEWHERE BETWEEN soccer and football floats the disk, the ultimate disk that is. Ultimate frisbee is a fast paced sport where the object of the game is to gct the disk into the other team’s end zone, very much like soccer, cleats and all. ‘We use a 175 gram disk — and it’s not called a Fris- bee.’ said Dan Kovacs, explaining that Frisbee is the gen- eric brand name, coined after Mother Frisbee's Pie Com- pany in Connecticut. Evidently her pie plates were tossed around ina similar manner. Kovacs explained the simple rules of the game. He was on a league in Vancouver, where ultimate has been popular for about seven years now. There are typically seven members of each team on the field at a time, five men and two women in mixed teams, ‘It's a genileman’s game, meaning that you call your own foul,’ explained Kovaks. There is no contact allowed and absolutely no running with the disk. You can only hold the disk for about seven seconds be- fore having to pass it lo another team member. If the disk is dropped, then it automatically goes to the other team. Kovacs hopes to get enough people interested to start a league, He can be reached at 635-1134. There are also games scheduled for Tuesday evenings at Hirsh Creek. Contact Stacey Brown for more information.
