Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 18, 1998 Please stop the noise’ An open letter to Don Hull & Sons Lid, Dear Sirs: IT have been a resident on Mountain Vista since the fall of 1995, At that time our real estate agent pointed out the noise factor from the. mills below the bench and highway traffic, , We were also aware that - Sundays were respected as’ ‘quiet’ days when the mills: would shut dawn. Like many other residents of Terrace, I have serious | concerns about the constant’ noise and level of noise being emitted from the new chipper owned by yourself and operating for Skeena Cellulose, During the day noise from the chipper and from daylime traffic on Hwy16 and Kalum Lake Drive and subdivision development in this area can be heard. At night the noise form the chipper is by far the worst when I’m getting the children ready for bed and [ CRRRWARE 1/480 635-:TIPS a A CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD when I’m trying to go to sleep myself. The pounding of the chip- per has been greatly affect- ing our sleep patteras. I am quite concerned that our general health is being com- promised from lack of sleep. I understand your compa- ny’s concems about your financial position and the need to exhausi every ave- nue to maintain-its viability, I also understand you are trying to address the prob- Jem by constructing a bar- rier using hay bales. Here are some other sug- gestions, — 1) House the chipper in a permanent structure using acoustically-engincered panels to contain the sound similar to music studios, etc. 2) Relocate the chipper away from residential areas. ‘The Mail Bag 3) Change the position of the chipper so that the noisc is diverted away from residential zoned areas, 4) Lower the chipper by four feet and install a berm to divert the noise skyward. © 5) Invite the expertise of the health department and other experts to alleviate the noise level. By no means am I an ex- pert in your areas of opera- tion. However, I feel a solu- tion does exist that can maintain your company’s . financial, integrity and pro- mote cooperation, Until a final decision can be implemented, would it be possible to modify the hours. of operation to allow for quiet evenings and Sun- days? _ Margret Beeching, Terrace, B.C, Hey Terrace, speak up Dear Sir: I commend Marlyn Mar- - shall for speaking up about her hospital stay (letter to the editor, Oct. 28, 1998}. Gramma’s Dear Sir: Gramma had a big football in her belly. The doctor said it had to come out. ‘Dr. Cosy took the football out and flew itto Vancouver for steak-stix (statistics). 1 guess they are like fish stix. The hospital is run by bean counters. They spend lots of money. The top counter is a boy like me. When he has $1 million he spends $1.5 million and wants for someone to give him the rest. Even I know if your allowance is $5, you can not spend $6. * The other counter counts balls.
