B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 18,1995 « RUTH CHINN passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17, 1994, at the Kitimat General Hospital ex- tended care unit at the age of 84 years, A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church at Ter- race, B.C. Pastor Terry Simonson officiated. Cremation took place at the Terrace crematorium. Ruth Plummer (Chinn) was born on Novy, 5, 1910 at Mitchell, South Dakota to Edgart and Naomi Plummer. She had one brother, Fred. When Ruth was three years old, her family moved to Vancouver, B.C, Ruth was known aS a quiet and beautiful little girl. As a young woman, whe moved to Saskatchewan around 1935-36. While working as a cook with farming and threshing crews near Paradise Hiil, Saskatchewan, she met Russell Chinn. Russell had come to Canada from Minnesota, where he grew up With his two sisters. Russell worked as a farm hand and Ruth as a cook until 1943. Then they moved to Elk Point, Alberta and after a time returned back to Saskatchewan where they farmed their land a Frenchman Butte and had cattle and horses, Russell later worked in the coal mines at Mountain Park, Alta, and then in 1952, they made the big move to Terrace, B.C, Russell and Ruth Chinn and their eight children loaded all their worldly belongings into an old Model T pickup and headed west. On the road with them were Henry and Ida Scheper and | their nine children in a pickup truck and camper. At Jasper they had to make an unexpected stop, They took Mrs. Chinn to hospi- tal, where she gave birth to her ninth child —- son Alfred, She stayed there with her new baby and later took the train to join the a MOEN rest of the family in Terrace. Once here the Chinns and Schepers ali bad to live in tents on Agar Ave. A short while Jater, Mr. Chinn bought some land across the river -at Usk and moved his family there to live on thal property, Mr, Chinn worked for the CNR and Jater helped buiid the road to Prince Rupert. He later worked at a mine at Pitman, just past Dorcen a bit, for Joe Bell. Dick Adams and Bill McRae. When a mill opened in town, Mr. China worked in Terrace, Sadly, on June 8, 1968 while crossing over on the ferry going . home to Usk, Mr. Chinn’s truck went over board into the Skeena, Neither the. truck nor. Mr, - Chinn’s body was ever found. In 1969, Mrs, Chinn moved into Thornhill to live along with sons Alfred and Lavern and lived there in her own home until 1989. : She was then baptized and be- came a member of the Christ . Lutheran Church. It was a very happy time in her life, During that year, however, she became ill and was hospitalized due to diabetic complications. Her condition deteriorated and in May of 1990, Mrs. Chinn went to the extended care unit of Kitimat General Hospital, where - she remained until her death. Ruth Chinn enjoyed country music and dancing. She played broombail in her earlier years and would go out toboganning with her children. Many willmiss | Ruth’s generousity For many years she was a mem- ber of the Order of the Royal Pur- ple. She took great delight in her grandchildren and great grand- children. Mrs. China was a very good cock who canned and baked many luaves of bread for herself and family right up to the week she first became ill in 1989. She was a kind and generous person and often fed people who stopped by, It was simple. If someone was — hungry, she fed them. Ruth Chinn was predeceased by her husband Russell in 1968. She is survived by all nine chil- dren — Fred. and Pauline in Ter- race, Lavern in Terrace, Margaret and Doug Stanvick in Terrace, Alfred in Terrace, B.C., Dora in Vancouver, Vernon in Invermere, B.C,, George and Angeline in Terrace, her brother Fred. in Vancouver; her nine grandchildren and 14 preatgrand- children. Ruth will be missed by all.
