TERRACE — The Terrace Lit- tle Theatre production of Heavens To Betsy is just around the corner, with shows begin- ning on Friday, Nov. 13 in the R.E.M. Lee Theatre. by Philip Musselman According to musical director Bonnie MacNeill, the play should be fun for everyone. The music. in the play consists of old standards like ‘'The Yellow Rose of Texas’? and ‘The Streets of Laredo” which are played cheerfully and are given new lyrics that fit with the pro- — duction. MacNeill feels the show will go over well and ‘that the hard working cast will be successful in entertaining local audiences with three showings on Nov. 13 and Nov. 14. MacNeill has lived in Terrace - _ for eight years and enjoys play- ing the piano. She has always been interested in music and has participated in numerous com- "munity events, MacNeill has participated in the last three Riverboat Days Review shows at the R.E.M. Lee Theatre, accom- panied students -for the Pacific Northwest Music Festival, par- ticipated in the Heritage Show at Expo, and she was a judge in the talent portion of last year’s Miss Terrace Pageant. **] have always been interested in music,’’ MacNeill explains, “and its a pleasure working with the cast of Heavens To Betsy. They’re all so hardworking and co-operative and there seems to ‘be ‘a good feeling within the . group.” 7 contindied on page 15 by Roy Greening Diamond Jubilee Week at Branch 13 was a great success and we thank all those who helped make it that way, in- cluding those who attended some of the events. No effect here from new property class TERRACE — The provincial government’s intent to create a new class of taxable property is not expected to have a major ef- fect on Terrace’s tax base. City Clerk-Administrator Bob Hallsor said he hasn’t seen any legislation on the subject, but he said the greatest benefits will , probably go to municipalities that already have a large in- . dustrial tax base. The B.C, Ministry of Finance and Corporate Relations an- nounced the proposed changes last month, and they will include the creation of a new category of taxable property called the Resource Industry Class. The only industrial operations in Terrace that will fall into the new class are sawmills. and petroleum transport and storage facilities, According to Finance Minister Mel Couvelier the legislation will also include a method for bringing tax assess- ment appeals under control, Couvelier said the legislation is necessary ‘‘to ensure local governments have the stable tax bases they need to finance local services’. In the same statement, however, Couvelier indicated taxation rates will not go up. “The changes are intended to stabilize, not increase overall in- dustrial taxes,’’ he said. The City of Terrace has suf- fered considerable revenue losses over the past several years due to successful tax assessment appeals by industrial property owners.
