In the Eastern Division it could be touch and go for both Smithers and Burns Lake. The Braves currently have a four point cushion over the Totems but that latter team has a couple of games in hand. These two clubs will be battling to the last whistle for the bye into the playoffs, In the Western Division the winner has been a foregone conclusion almost since the first game with the powerful Kings running away from the pack. The battle in this division is for second and third place. The Terrace Cen- tennials looked like a shoo-in for this spot earlier in the season but with the crum- bling of the back room boys running the team over the Christmas break and the desertion of seven top ranking players, the remaining Centennials have struggled valiantly but have been tumbling steadily towards the cellar. The locals are clutching onto a one point lead over the Kitimat Winter Hawks as the season draws to a clase. Both teams still have five games to get into the records before the final draw is known. Second place is important to both teams as it means a home town advantage for the quarter final series. For the Cents, they still have to face Burns Lake twice (which is no easy task at the best of times). This is a home and home series. Also on the list facing the Cents are single encounters with Smithers, Houston and (forget it) Prince Rupert. In weekend action the Cents dropped a pair while Burns Lake defeated Kitimat and lost to Rupert. Kitimat won and lost while the Totems took their only encounter over Houston. There is a game tonight at the Terrace Arena as the Trying Cents take on the top team in the league, Prince Rupert Kings. Cents bow in overtime For the second con- secutive Saturday fans at the Terrace Arena wit- nessed a highly entertaining game. The Terrace Cen- tennials and Kitimat Winter Hawks, the PNWHL's two junior clubs, provided another fast paced, exciting contest as over 250 fans looked on. The end result however was different from a week ago with the Cents dropping a 6-5 overtime decision. The Centennials started off quickly scoring 42 seconds after the opening whistle. Kelly McCabe fed Lance Legouffe who was breaking up the left side. Legouffe fired a shot along the ice to beat Denny Sz- mata in the Hawk net. With newcomer Rob Pyde between the pipes for the Cents, the Hawks had trouble finding the range. It wasn’t until the 9:02 mark that the Hawks tied the game as Dale Kellar was allowed freedom at the net’s side. Alan Wakita kept the puck in Cent territory and fed Blake Walkanshaw who in turn saw Kellar wide open. The Hawk winger wasted no time firing a shot high into the net. - Just 34 seconds later the visitors tock a 2-1 lead as the Cents defence had a momentary lapse. Brad Owens carried the puck in and Don Kellar received his pass along the side boards. Scott Marleau was open in front and converted a perfect Kellar pass. With three minutes left in the period the Hawks went up by two as Trevor Sand- berg and Blake Walkanshaw combined with Walkanshaw firing the puck past Pyde. Twenty-six seconds later Terrace drew within one as Dave Wakefield scored his _ first of two. Tim Kolner and Doug Matheson kept the puck in as Wakefield moved slipped it around Pyde. Even though smocth sk into the slot, Matheson saw him there and slid the puck over, as Wakefield beat Szmata with a waist high shot, The locals tied the score at three with one minute and 10 seconds left. Legouffe scored his second of the game while killing a penalty to Kelly McCabe. Legouffe pokechecked one Hawk defender, outskated ‘another, then cut in front deking Smzata and slipping the puck into an almost empty net for his third short-handed goal of the season. The second. period featured only one goal as both Pyde and Szmata came up big, With one minute and 37 seconds left in the frame four players, two from each club, were penalized. The two teams lined up to the right of Szmata for the face- off. The Hawks, however, did not seem to want to be involved, they stood around. talking. to.one another and =: changing players. Referee™ Red L’Estrange blew his whistle a number of times and also instructed the linesman to drop the puck. When the linesman did this Cent Barry Heit was as surprised as anyone to find himself alone. Heit did not hesitate as he wound up and fired a blistering shot past a startled Szmata. The third period saw the Cents outscored 2-1 and the score 5-5 after regulation time. At the 1:07 mark Ron Egan and Al Zakita com- bined to set up Walkanshaw for his second goal of the day. - The Hawks went ahead with four and a half minutes left as Walkanshaw com- pleted his hat trick. After a Kellar pass, Wakita took a shot which slid by the defenceman, Walkanshaw picked up the loose puck and : ating Barry Heit likes to do things the fancy way, With just over a minute to go Wakefield tied the score notching his second of the game. After a scramble in front Wakefield got the puck in the slot and fired a high backhander over sprawled Hawk goalie. | the This set the stage for overtime and the Cents came out flying, firing nearly a dozen shots toward the net and record six shots on goal. Szmata, however, came up big making big saves. After four minutes and 21 seconds of play the locals ot what seemed like a reak as Al Wakita was sent off for roughing. The Cents started out of their own end but an errant pass resulted in an icing call, With the face-off deep in the Cent territory Hawk Greg Egan won the draw and flipped the puck to winger Don | -Kellar, Kellar wasted no — ” time getting ‘his. shot away: ‘as he blasted the disc by Pyde. Despite the loss there were several bright spots for the Centennials. Dave Wakefield broke a season- long scoring slump getting two, Lance Legouffe played his best game _ since Christmas, skating . and shooting with the authority of afirst rate hockey player. Rob Pyde showed that he is a welcome addition to the Cents, coming up with many key saves, And the team as a wholeis still hustling at all times as each player gives. 110 percent The next home action for the Cents is tonight when they face the league-leading Prince Rupert Atom Motor Kings. On Saturday they travel to Burns Lake for an inter-divisional clash. walking on his hands wasn’t exactly what he had in mind. Don Gillespie and Wayne George rounded out the scoring in the latter stages of the game, as they too made good use of the backhand shot, That win, which also gave Rupert a split in their six-game season series wilh the Braves, may prove costly for the Kings, however, in that defenseman Moe Kryta suffered a fracture on the left side of his face when he was clipped by an errant high stick. The seriousness of Kymta’s injury is presently unknown, if he is able to return to the Kings’ line-up this year, he will have to wear a face mask of some description. -at Kings’ Cochrane and goaltender Rob Pyde. Jerry Kurka faced 24 shots in earning the shutout for Rupert, with perhaps his best save coming late in the third period when he snatched a Doug Matheson drive out of the air with his glove hand.
